Every OS GUI has its port, including BeOS and KDE. I am not a fan of ports myself, but I find stupid to try to stop them.

an Aqua WindowBlinds skin will only gain more customers for StarDock, not for Apple.
i agree with you that OS ports/rips are not as bad as rips inside the community, and i also think that Apple is acting a little strange here. but in my eyes it would have been just fair if the one (company or person) that invented it would have gotten the chance to release it first.

Big difference between an XP port and other OS-ports is that you use your XP-port on Windows. It's not like you're using your OSX port on the Mac, eh? SO Apple is losing out on it.

As for OSes being ripped, I might be crazy, but aren't these designs made by artists just like the skins made by Pixtudio? When will it be wrong for Pixtudio to protect their creations from being ripped?

They 'may' both entail the use of another's graphical elements, but the OS 'port' is generally understood to have a derived origin....everyone will be aware it is a BeOS OS origin, for example, whereas a 'copy' of a pixtudio skin would cloud the issue of who copied whom [unless you had prior experience/knowledge].
I know the 2 examples seem the same - someone's work is being 'copied', but it's all about the perception of intent to 'delude' the observer...

The specific difference is...if you have an OS...eg, XP, and you kake a skin from it, or bits of it, it remains obvious where its origins were....but that is NOT the case with a third-party skin being used in the same way.
IF the third-party skin were taken from an OS itself then things can get 'cloudy' because no-one can determine who has imitated who, both having 'copied' the OS.
WHEN and IF you wish to make use of another individual's [skinner's] graphics or work, you MUST seek and obtain their permission BEFORE you ever upload any 'derived' works to the net.....You're free to do what you like on your own computer, just not to publish without approval...

So being able to "use" a like styled GUI on M$ makes them nervous. A progam on Linux designed a few weeks ago I believe allows Linus users to have Micro$oft OS on it too. (I do believe if you know how to split your hard drive up you can have as many OS's as you want as long as there is room for it, but not many people know how to divide there hard drives)
So I get where they are coming from. I just wish they had more comfidance in there product. DesktopX is not MAC OSX. There commercials are lame. I want OS X because it is good and I feel that if I want to do graphic design and movie design and 3d images/models then go with the computer that started it all from the beginning.
PC's are for computing. MAC'S are for designing.
I also like there design stlye for the casing of the computer itself. PC's still look stiff.
So PC's for computing at work or AutoCAD or some 3D software apps. MAC is for design. MAC's look better (and now work better) so they should focus on that.

don't get me started about ad campans. Especilly on the net!!!
people have brains, consumers have minds; Stop telling them what they want and start helping them to find what they need. (and want...not in any specific order or combination)
