Music playback issue

So I use iTunes when I am using Windows. Right now I'm on a clean install of XP SP3 along with the latest version of iTunes. Every time I have music playing in the background the music will skip. This happens when I start up Firefox on reload a page on run any other program. I have 4 GB of DDR2 on the machine along with a newer 500 GB hard drive. At first I thought the drive wasn't keeping up with my usage. Maybe it's my CPU because it's a 2.9 GHz single core CPU. I have no idea what's going on. Any suggestions on a fix? Just want to be able to cruise the internet with my music on without the music skipping.

i had a problem similar to yours and it turned out to be a codec problem of all things. You could try installing a small, generic, codec package.

@Moshi: I had Fedora Linux and Windows XP installed last month. While using Linux and any player included with Linux there was no skipping.
@Werewolf: What codec would you suggest?
I'm testing out Foobar2K right now, so far no skips. Wonder when Itunes got so bloated.
