Is there any way to have an animated background?

Sunday, June 23, 2002 by JDavidHarper | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I'm looking at some of these wallpapers, and I think a lot of them would look better with a little animation (mostly the computer-lookin ones... I can't remember the name, but there's one that is orange and gray that has a world wireframe on it) Is there away to do this?

The only way to have an animated Wallpaper, is to use animated gifs, or HTML files with embedded Flash.
Then after turning on active desktop, these can be set as desktop wallpapers

Wow Hippy, that wold kill a system all right.

EnRegis, the only acceptable way to have an animated background is to use Desktop X and have animated objects on it. There are a few examples of these in the DX section.

Of course, if you detour away from the Explorer shell then you will find other methods of providing animation....LiteSTEP is a good example. I've often used animation in my themes [just for fun]...

I personally liked AVI's playing on the desktop. Sure, it takes up 40% CPU time, but . . .

For the future, perhaps.

an other way to have animations on your desktop would be LSLIVE. it plays animated gifs, can lauch apps when you click on it and also has sounds on mouse-overs and clicks.

this app comes from the LiteStep scene, but is a standalone exe. you can get it here: http://www.shellfront.org/modules/lslive-1.3.0.2.zip

I think u can put animated wallpapers into most windows shell skining programs, u certainly can in desktop x, although u have to disable active desktop to use them u can then open the wallpaper and intergrade it into your theme, it eats up comp power but the results u get can look great

Good tip for using Drempel and similar backgrounds (I usually use the awesome ZMatrix background, looks like The Matrix); set the priority to Lowest in task manager- that way it never slows your computer down, it just pauses while you do other CPU hungry things.
