A killing doubt

Well, after wishing a notebook for years, now I have the opportunity to buy one.
Untill here, everything is fine, but after studing a lot of models and brands I came up with to different (and great, in my opinion) machines.
1- Toshiba Satellite 5105 S607

2- Sony Vaio GRX 570

I can have any of them on a good deal here, both at the same price.
I am more for the Toshiba one, but...Any advise?

FlipNet: For sure I find Dell´s notebooks great, but there is just a 'small' problem with Dell here, their price.
The Toshiba Satellite 607 or Vaio GRX 570 would cost me here, the same price (around US$ 2,200.00)
The equivalent of Dell, Latitude C840, would cost me 'just' US$ 4,380.00. Almost the same price of both of the others together.

Ouch! Sorry, didn't knew about it! 4300$US is way too much indeed!!! This is the price in CDN for a very well equiped portable here in Canada!

Wow Treetog, I just bought for my boss a Dell Inspiron P4 1.7GHz pretty well equipped for 2,400$ CA. That's like 1,500$ US.
Why is it so much more in Brazil? Wow wow wow!

Things that are made here are really expensive, the Toshiba computers made here are all in old style and the top of the line is a celeron 900 (allways costing a fortune), so we look to the imported ones that are better and cheaper ( see the prices above), but then we have this warranty problem.

Warranty is something really important when the company has a good support service.
In December 2000 I bought a new Sansung 17¨ 700 IFT flat screen monitor.
A few months ago I had a problem with it, I called them and they told me theywould replace it for a new one. One month later, they called me saying that my model was out of the new line and because of that, they gave me a new 19¨ flat screen, wich is around US$ 500,00 more expensive then mines with not a single $ cost for me.
Becuase of things like that, I will never going to buy a good like a notebook without warranty.
Well, I have no hurry, since my desktop one was upgraded 4 months ago and now I have a pretty fast machine.
As a Brazillian, we must learn to be pacient...

Don't be ashamed of Brazil, it's hardly a 3rd world country. Brazil is the economic center of South America. Besides that you have the best soccer team in the world!!!

I have read them all and I am very disappointed !!!
You better read those comments (the negative one's) and you will understand why you are lucky that you didn't bye a laptop yet!

You have to be careful about taking the reviews on Cnet too seriously. For example read the reviews for Stardock programs like Windowblinds... It's obvious that some StyleXP freaks were purposely trashing WB!

You may have right Bill_Sawyer, but those comments are from users who have bye all ready those products and the have many common complaints. I just put some attention to the " common complaints ".

Adni: I also read all the comments and they good in their majority. also saw about other models and brands and in all of them I found bad comments.

ahh... sorry, didn't see that conversation up there.
Both the machines you listed look like great desktop replacement units. The 1600x1200 screens with XP's 'clear-type' look incredible. I have one on my Dell that's 15" and I prefer it to my 21" monitor. Sony and Toshiba are both excellent machines, it would be a tough choice...

keep in mind, you may not need a warranty if you buy the Sony... hehe (j/k you never know) I've just been Blessed so far maybe
Well I hope you're able to get a good machine @ a good price w/ a good warranty treetog! the work you do you will def need lots of Ram and good video card and what is that called? graphics accelerator right?
take your time don't rush or you'll be stuck w/ something you'll be unsatisfied with. it'll come your way I'm sure!

Please do not think I am saying ANYTHING bad about ANY make of notebook, BUT working in a REPAIR center that handles ALL makes through lease work. ALL MAKES break down about the same. You get lucky, you don't. Sony, Toshiba, Dell, IBM, Compaq, NEC, ACER............... If you get one like Doreen or I, then you are lucky, the rate of IFFR "In the field failure rate" is about 5% on the big four. Dell, IBM, Toshiba and Compaq. They are all good systems. I wish you the best in getting what you want.

I personnaly appreciate a lot Dell's products. They also have a strong service support (even in Brazil!)
