Have you thought?

Tuesday, May 7, 2002 by adni18 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Have you thought to make some improvements for the system rating in the version 2 of WinCustomize?
What is the use of it, if the authors doesn't know why they get 10 from someone and after 1 from someone else for the same work and in the same day?
As the comments are not anonymous why the ratings must be anonymous and without a small comment giving the reason of the rate?
I think that the rating system is the only black point in WinCustomize and it has to be fixed. So, much work from all sides and the result is not the one that we all expecting, for many well known reasons.
Do you care about the authors of this site? Please give us a sign that you care.

I didn't want to say anything personal in this thread, but I will:
I am mad with this system rating that gives a change to some persons to express their lower self’s.

WiseOldMan are you suggesting "Taxation without Representation", that's the stuff Tea parties are born from. I don't think the idea was that the $20 would be payment for a membership, membership for basic access is free. If I understand it correctly your money would be for a subscription which would allow greater access and goodies. Sounds like a bargain to me. I pay $27 dollars a year for PC Mag, I see it as a similar thing. I would hope though that if subscriptions are enough to pay for this site that it wouldn't be solely controlled by Stardock but rather by the Admin's.

Good points Bill. I understand the subscription concept and I certainly wasn't suggesting that $20 would make us stockholders. Just that the site could become more of a true "community" rather than a stardock skin library.

Each day, within the 24 hours that we get in Australia for a day [not sure about the real world], I spend usually about one and a half to two hours here at Wincustomize - checking messages on the board [part admin, part social] and looking at [moderating] uploads....for me, it's mostly walls, screenshots, WinAMP, LiteSTEP - stuff I know and use.
By the time you have downloaded screenshots or checked inside zips, maybe emailed people about faulty uploads, moderated walls, etc, the burden [on a 56k modem] of ALSO commenting on skins as well would basically mean giving up 'Real Life'[tm] totally...

This essentially goes for all the admins/wizops....and is why you won't see too many comments directly from us on the uploads.

When the janitor gets the coding in place to simplify access to the comments and ratings you 'should' see more input/comments from the admins...

i guess i'm curious why some have the impression that people are giving undeservedly low ratings. are there some specific examples? and how do you know?

also, virtually everything should have at least one rating. i personally rated the entire back catalogue when wc went online. every skin. (i stand behind every last one, by the way) and when a new submission is put online, it gets rated. if you've found any zeroes, please point them out to me

Well, I did give one example. My 700is skin was rated 4 here, featured skin at LOS and daily deviation at DA, i had to go to IRC to ask someone else to rate it to get it up to a 6 so it would be seen. Now I'm not saying the skin should have been rated a 10 or anything, but a 4? The first skin I made was atrocious and it wasn't even rated that low.

Then there was one of adni's walls that got rated a 1 by someone last month.

I could go on, but it's probably pointless anyways.

It's odd that you're unaware this happens, as it's fairly common.

That's why us "skinners" have been lobbying for so long to ditch the ratings. It's not as if we're just complaining for the sake of complaining.

There a quite a few zeroes out there if you actually look around.

I guess I should be careful what I ask for ....got plently of ratings here the last couple days. I got a nice 5 for one of my best skins I've done. Thanks everyone!

Listen to davad70 migellito

I will give you just one example, (I have too many, I could write all day).
My last skin "Omega" was having Peer Rating 10 with 4 rates and suddenly it went down to 5, what do you think that has happen? You know what it needs to fall down from 10 to 5? (By the way, this skin is almost perfect technically).

After all, I believe, it is still a beautiful site, but the ratings are good ONLY for some Administrators and Wizops, to have something to play with...if you know what I mean
