Surfing, picked up something strange

.adserver.com.

Sunday, June 17, 2012 by Rainbows44 | Discussion: Personal Computing

I'd appreciate any help I can get with this.

So..One day I was surfing clothing sites, regular sites like Walmart, Just my size, etc, nothing kinky. I suppose it popped up while I was surfing, but I did not pay attention. Later I noticed it popped up at random several times a day. It opens a new window, and at first it says .adserver.com. (I added the periods to keep it from being a real link) Then it morphs into another site, once it was a search engine. I usually close it when it pops up, so I don't know what other sites it morphs into. What I need to know is, what do I do to block this site? I am a relative beginner when it comes to the inner workings of my pc, so be gentle with me. ( I see no connection with what pages I have open and when it pops up, but I know it does when I use Google search)

Thank you in advance.

I know how to use the keyboard, and open programs and follow directions. I need an expert to walk me thru anything more complicated than that, as I am nervous about messing things up. (Thank God for System Restore!)

Its a highjack.  You most likely have some type of virus on your pc.

Do you know how to post a screenshot on the forums?

Technically, neither is true.

I think I know how to post a screen shot. I'll post it when it pops up again.

Well I'm guessing that's true but what makes me think that it is a virus hijack is that it happens when searching with Google.

But you're right seeing a screenshot would help.

Also, if you are using Internet Explorer a list of addons, toolbars and extensions plus search providers may show something.

I don't want a shot of the the pop up.

Start/ Run: type msconfig: Start up Panel. Post a screenshot.

Upload it to a photo hosting site, I use Photobucket. Get the link. Hit the little tree above where you type your reply, paste the link in.

I have no idea whether that worked or not, as I have a very slow dial up connection here. I'm trying tho!

Stretch the panel out so I can see all the startups and their full names.

The only ones not showing are: GameStop, Microbe Clock, and Picture Mover, none of these is new.

You have a lot of crap running you don't need, but nothing that would cause the pop-ups. Is this Vista and are you using IE9? (it's apparent you had/have Chrome installed at some point)
