Anyone Se The Lord of the Rings Yet?

Just got back form the show and am planning to see it again ASAP. It ROCKED, I am a hard core Tolkien fan, and as a Tolkien Illustrator a bit of a purest, put I have to say they did a great job, and it was well worth the wait.

I am probably what you would call a purist. Ive read the books at least six or seven times (and I'm going to read them again). I've been to see it twice already and could see it a third time with little encouragement. Very well done, as true to the story and the feel of the books as anything I could have hoped for.

Okay. I'll throw my hat into the purist ring (Hell, I got between a hundred to two hundred or so various Tolkien and Tolkien-related books going back to the 60's). And I enjoyed the movie. Yeah it was tough to disengage the internal book-references in my head. That's why I'm gonna see it again now that I know what to expect and enjoy it even more without all that internal background purist chatter going on in my head.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I think that this is a movie for everyone (well, except kids, because those were some of the scariest orcs that I’ve ever seen) but again, go to sites that review the movie and include reader reviews and the bulk of those people who don’t like this movie claim to be “purists” who then go on to nit-pick every last little detail as to why the book is much better, why the movie sucks, blah, blah, blah, all along forgetting that this is an ADAPTATION of the book, and failing to judge the movie on it's own merits. When done this way you may find that this movie could possibly be better that (gasp!) the original Star Wars...

I never read the books, did not have a clue what all the hoopla was about (Cept the fact that I seen previews on TV and it looked to be a cool fantasy)
That guy Frodo and the 3 stooges (not to be confused w/ the other followers) ruined the movie
there was only three interesting charactors the one that was in love w/ that elve/fairy girl and of course the wizard guys
some good scenes yes but that's about it! and I'm untainted by the books cuz I never read them...

Wow, that is the first person I have herd say something so bad. I have to strongly disagree. But just for comparison, what do you consider a good Fantasy?

actually mormegil the real problem I had w/ this movie was four particular charactors they seemed to ruin it for me, cuz they were not keeping it real, it got too silly...

but the preview of this movie, let me to believe it was a different kinda fantasy or something, I don't know but, Frodo was all eyes and no action, and 3 of his sidekicks were way too silly (cept the two guys w/ long brown hair and the wizard guy I really liked)
and again too much talking and only a few good scenes that got my attention...
could be since I did not read the book I had no clue what these ppl were talking about so I got alittle lost during those parts
either way I felt the movie should have made sense and been more stimulating to even those who "never" read the book... =/

Hmmmmm........ Well if they had changes the story any further they really would have had a riot. But unfortunately the other hobbits become more important as the story goes on. I cant help your opinion but I hope you see the rest of the movies, you have to remember that this movies is only the first act in a classical Hero myth, and I think it is more important to keep to the structure of the books rather then try and make it more friendly to the masses, you can please most of the people some of the time......

I'm looking forward to seeing it... even more so after reading this thread. I've never read the books but I lived on communes where there were plenty of Frodo's running around. Those people used to tell me I was an elf so now I'll get to see what they meant by that 
Also, I saw another movie by the same director about zombies and a guy that straps a lawn mower on his chest and chops the zombies to bits by running into them... yep, can't wait to see Lord of the Rings...

Don't know if it is true or not, but I had heard that they cut out at least an hour from Fellowship. Can't wait for the Director's cut DVD .
I read the trilogy for the first time 25 years ago, probably five or six times since. It's been almost ten since I picked it up, and decided to wait an read them again AFTER I saw the movie, just so that I would not sit there ruining it for myself. I must say that it kicked ass. Took my 13 year old, and I'm not sure who enjoyed it more. Going to go see it again, probably this weekend.

Dethnite, I read somewhere that the first cut of Fellowship was 4 and 1/2 hours. I don't know how accurate that is though. According to what I've read, we can expect the DVD to be released in August 2002.

Read the book.
My first read started on a Sunday and finished on the Wednesday.....[all 3 'books' were in the one]...I couldn't put it down, but then re-read it starting on the Thursday.
It was 'THAT' good....

Form viewing the movie I can see how there might have been alot cut. I hope they do put it on the DVD. but I think the finished cut is about as accesable to none tolkien fans as they could get. Saw it again last night and have to say still just as good. I plan on seeing agin when they add the trailer for the Two Towers to the end.

Doreen must be a female of around 45 or older. According to the demographic study on IMDB.
All demographics loved it except for females 45 or older. Pretty strange. Though I think Doreen is quite a bit younger than that in real life.

it seems to me that he's one of them, and is better off not seeing this wonderful movie because by his own words he'll be going into it expecting it to be bad, wanting it to be bad, so for him, it will be. Listening to these "purists" pick it to pieces made me feel a little sorry for them, because I realized that this is what they do to EVERYTHING: they look at the bad reviews first, look at the negative side of everything first, and take their L337 attitude online and let the "anti-everything' beast loose.
But for the rest of the planet (those of us who enjoyed reading the books, and went into the movie just to see a movie, not to analyze it for "errors" and glorify them, and instead basing our opinion on the film's merits) will love this movie. I went with a group, and several of them don't like "these kinds of movies", however they left the theatre completely blown away, as was myself. Not one person in our group (there were nearly 50 of us) could say that they've seen a better movie in a long, long time. It was great to see a movie as amazing as Lord of the Rings...
...it's been a long time.
