Getting new glasses....

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 by Jafo | Discussion: Everything Else

It's been too many years.....should'a got 'em probably 5 years ago....but you know....you get slack/diverted/etc....

I've had them since I was about 15 .... I blame school/study for now having crap eyesight....used to be able to spot a Wedgie 2 miles up in the air currents [Aussies will know what that is]....but not anymore.

Needless to say things went downhill....getting the script....

First....the original optometrist has long-since moved on...so it's a new one....then they lost my history...all 40+ years of it.... then their computers went down... and their camera for photographing the back of the eye.....

Then they didn't have decent frames [as good as what I already had....] ...so I had to leave them with my 'clear' glasses....and I am now either stuck looking dimly through the prescription sunnies....[and turn up the brightness on the monitor]...or all fuzzy with the ancient glasses I never threw out...but really should....[they're NQR now]

So.... I got a week of 'making do' till the new ones are done [into the good frames] ...then go through much the same with the prescription sunnies....

And just the first lot cost me $440 so it'll be all that again for the dark lenses [polarised].

Actually....

I think I know why I waited so long....

Meanwhile....squinting at the screen typing this is an absolute pain....

It'll be quite politic if people 'tread softly' in my presence...as I am likely to strangle twits at the drop of a hat.....

....assuming I can see them....

Just a thought... each time you go, take a zip drive with you and have them copy the note to there as well.

You can come back and read this in a week.

Won't be long now and you will be able to look down 2 miles at those wedgies and smile again.

I know you are having trouble seeing again so made the print a bit larger.

That's pretty pricey.  Don't they have anything like Zenni down under?  This is the best, least expensive place I've found to buy glasses, and they have some of the coolest frames ever: http://www.zennioptical.com/

Screw squinting, just increase zoom on the screen.

Heck I still increas zoom. and my last eye exam put me at   20 15

that's a decrease from 20 10 when I was still in HS back in 198hurumphhurmph

$440 AUD [about $460 USD these days] is the lens only ...using the original frames.

They're a grind for astigmatism....I'm neither long-sighted nor short.

The sunnies will be probably the same price...same script...but polarised coating adds to it.

The frames were about $260 probably ten years ago [good quality titanium]...

re '20 15' ... Terry is 20 - 200 .   Needless to say she doesn't drive...

...or you can get ready-made things at the chemist for about $2 .... if it's just magnification....

I'm in the same boat as you, waiting on my new glasses. I did get new frames though. Thank God for optical insurance. I only paid about $500 for them. I got no line bifocals, new frames, and polarized sunglasses that stick to the lenses with tiny magnets. Without the insurance, they would have cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000.

Most of that cost is in the lenses, because I'm damn near blind (and I don't drive either, lol). My share of the frames was only $25, and the magnet sunglasses were $129.

They said I should get them by Thursday, which will make the total for them  2 weeks.

My brother had 20-5 vision and could  "split binaries" with his naked eye when he would come out at night when I had a telescope and lots of time.

I'm 20-250 in one eye and 20-400 in the other with astigmatism in one and not the other.  They never match my lenses right.  Been like that since I was 9 or 10.

It's a bummer.

That's GIGO, unfortunately....as you go through the process..."which is better...this....or this....?" ...

I just picked my new ones up on Monday, Specsavers took 4 days, new lenses and frames, so i sure can't complain.

Same here for my vision.  Except I had severe astigmatism in my left eye, and moderately severe in my right eye.  That was until last year.  I had cataract surgery in both eyes, and had implants put in my eyes...now I see better than I have since I was a little kid before I had to get glasses at the age of 8!  I don't need glasses for anything anymore, not even for reading!  I am on Medicare and it paid for it all, except for $700 for each eye for the cost of the implants, because of my astigmatism.  The surgeon was able to get rid of all the astigmatism in my right eye, and about 95% of it in my left eye.  I am a happy camper now!

Some grinds are costlier than others.

Once upon a time mine was only do-able in glass....these days it's coated plastic....but no cheaper....

You have a seeing problem and I have an age problem. It was late when I read this and replied and my brain slows down. I'm fresh now and yes, would rather look at a wedgie upwards.

I constantly have to tell young people in chats, "TYPE LOUDER--I CAN'T HEAR YOU!".
