Just quietly hopping on the band-wagon.....got it installed at last......bucket-loads of bells and whistles......now let's see how long it takes me to crash it...

Ah.....up for 1hr 45 min....not crashed yet....looking good...[of course, I haven't really 'tried' yet]...

I haven't crashed XP for the 2 weeks(?) I've had it... Although part of that may be because I'm not a stepper. I've head LiteStep is very un-stable and crashes frequently. Isn't that right, Jafo?

My experience with XP so far is that the system litterally never crashes, but individual apps seem to crash a lot more than it did in Win2k...

I've had the same thing as paxx, no windows crashes at all...just various apps crashing pretty frequently. All in all, pretty impressed so far.

Are folks moving to the home or professional version? What's the difference? I'm running Windows 2000 Professional - I want to run XP (I think) but should I get the home upgrade for $99 or the professional for $199. There are some special deals.... Also, has anyone searched EBay for XP? There are lots of people selling links to a website(s) that supposedly lets you get software from MS for little or nothing? Too good to be true?

Well...I installed it on a 2 gig drive....where 1.5 gig is the OS...[the hibernate function accounts for 1 gig of that, so that was the first thing to go....got sick of the low-drive-space warnings].
Really the only truly daggy aspect of XP is the plastic-look crappy green start button....that really shows a lack of class.
Almoast as bad as that see-through glassy Mac rubbish.
Who cloned who on that one?....
One win is my Virus checking proggy actually recognizes the OS and installs....in 2K it claims I need NT4 or better...[silly thing didn't recognize NT5].
Media player searched my drives and found media I didn't even remember having...[not sure yet if that is a plus].
My wife Terry is not impressed that her logon icon appears to be a duck, and accuses me of being 'strange'....nuffin to do with me...that's a default icon, I plead...
Going to leave the comp on all weekend....see if it falls over....will probably burn my house down....[ya gotta love computers]...
Next addition is LiteSTEP....if you never see me again.....you will know why....

For me Windows 2000 was the most stable OS, and applications rarely crashed in 2k like they do in XP.
Also keep in mind that certain of your programs may not work in XP, even if they worked in 2000. Cases in mind: Norton Antivirus, McAffee Antivirus, Easy CD Creator, PC MACLAN. There may be more, but these are the ones I firsthand experienced that they don't work on XP; you will need to upgrade and buy the latest version of the above software to get it to work in XP.
Other than that, ICQ refuses to work since I upgraded to Office XP, although for some people it works fine. Applications such as Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash crashes at least once a day, sometimes 3 or 4 times. And I have talked to a number of friends who also upgraded and all have confirmed like davad70 that their programs indeed crash more often.

As for the proggies you listed...
I don't use either Virus proggy, and prefer Nero over EasyCD anyway.
Most of my installs of 2K ended up with a dud wowexec.exe which meant I couldn't run any 16 bit proggies at all...that includes 'sysedit'.

But...
Autocad 2000 uses a 16 bit installer.....so you cannot install the darn thing if wowexec screws up.
The HP Scanner 'patch' install method on the HP site is incorrect as well...[at least for me it is]...if you try to run the patch with the scanner connected [on], the OS will crash and reboot....turn it off [the scanner], and it will install OK....go figure....
In 2K I get random lockups....sometimes 3 or 4 a day, other times, none at all.....too damn random to narrow-down.
If XP cures that part alone, I'll be a happy chappie...

I'll stick with W2k! I couldn't ask for a more stable OS on my machine. I've never seen the BSOD. Why spend more money??

IN case you havent' noticed, there is a frenzied wide-eyed cult of XP around right now, and i am sure they would gladly gouge out your eyes for even IMPLYING that XP isn't the best thing since sliced bread and human reproduction.
What you say of 2K is true, but right now, the truth can get you nailed to a tree.
Hang your heads low...come back out later when the dust has settled and the wild-eyed crazies have moved on to whatever version of windo$e comes next.
I will pray for your souls in the meantime.

The story so far....
Just did a copy and paste of my full 12 themes of integrated LiteSTEP into XP....chucked in ShellON to handle the shell switching.....whacked the systray fix in the startup, re-booted and presto.....glorious grey again...
Yep, 'STEPping in XP is dead easy....and gone is that placky green start button...
This OS just gets better and better....
Not sure what I'll add next....this is just a test install on an old 2 gig drive, so I won't mind if it falls over due to queer-stuff.
Minor glitch is I have a PS2 mouse and an UXB mouse installed...[call me ambidextrous]...and I don't seem to be able to remove the PS2 one and still reboot....odd...but I'm sure there is a solution somewhere...
Maybe ICQ is next to add...

ICQ works....another install plus copy/paste of existing data and up and going in no time at all...
