GUI Championships 2012
Just a head's up
Wednesday, January 4, 2012 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News
Greetings!
I just wanted to give all skinners fair warning that we WILL be having a GUI Championships competition in Fall of 2012.
The categories will include:
* WindowBlinds skins
* IconPackager themes
* DeskScapes animated backgrounds
* Static Desktop backgrounds (traditional windows wallpapers)
* And Possibly, depending on when Windows 8 ships, skins for a new, unannounced, Object Desktop program

It would eliminate a lot of stress too. Less brain drain. lol

Folks should be able to skin what they want, the more they skin, the more availability, to potential voters, the more work,thats been put in, the more credit the skin should get.
seems fair to me.
Or.. be very specific about what OS's should be skinned and neither doing more or less will have positive, or adverse affects on the judging.

better yet, break into two divisions. master skinners and everyone else. master skinners have a certain level to maintain and should be reviewed accordingly. the rest of us usually only skin to the OS's that we have and that would probably be win7???

That's true for everyone.
This is the GUIC.....not us and them.
Who's to decide how much work went into a skin? Do you that mean that a skin with all 3 OS's should automatically get a higher score? Hardly seems fair to those that don't have all 3.
Better

About "being open for one of the 3 OS's", I don't think it's fair as Win7 is lot more work to skin than the old fart XP, I think that Win7 should be the requeriment and if anyone want to make Vista and ....XP, they're open to, but more for the availability of the visual style.
I think that is an excellent idea

more of a, "why enter when I'm up against master skinners". this way at least, I might get an honorable mention.
Greg, don't cut yourself short. If it's put on an even playing field such as skin for Win 7 only, many different people could win (maybe even Zubak). It's it's required to skin for all three os's that is another story.
I would guess that if it was a Win7 only some people may still skin all 3 because that is what they are use to, want to and enjoy actually. Again if the contest is just for Win7 I don't think anyone should not at least be allowed to skin as many OS's as they want but the only one looked at and judged is the OS that is picked. If one OS is picked to skin by no means should anyone get extra votes or credit because they decided to skin more then one OS. Just my look on the situation.
The only problem I see from my statement above is if the winner and runner(s)up all had skinned for all 3 OS's that would lend a lok of people to think it did have something to do with it. Saying that I believe the judges will be fair and not let that come into play and only judge on the required OS.
I skin for Vista and Win7 and have never done XP. I really have no desire to skin XP to be honest and if it's required would have no desire to learn just for one contest.

If I remember correctly from the '08 GUIC, there were a number of skins done by non masters that rated quite well

Give me a break. I'm still trying to remember what happened last year.
I was heer in 08 but never saw anything about ratings only the winners. I'm sure it was listed somewhere.

Ya that's kind of the way I'm thinking - getting too focused on o/s would probably weed out a lot of good entries before they were even sent in. Heck, even if you only skinned Vista, I think you should be able to send it in. Who knows, the greatest skin on Earth might pop up for Vista or XP.
As far as weighting it all is concerned, well I'll leave that to the judges. "That's why they make the big bucks"
(Ya, "That's a joke son, that's a joke.")

Thanks Tim does bring back some memories for me now that I saw it.
I also saw this
"Supporting Vista isn't required in the contest but obviously, if the skin doesn't work on Vista at all it's going to take a hit given that a quarter of the users out there are using it and that's only going to grow."
Now I'm wondering if it's going to matter if only one OS is required and people only skin for that will it come into play as it did in the above contest? Sounds like from what is mentioned above it will still matter. If one OS is picked for this contest then things have to be mentioned as to if it will have an effect or not if one only does one OS or some do more even though only one is required.

dude...do you seriously want me to fly to your house and shove a piece of cake down your throat??? you are soooo silly..*sigh* if i hear you speak
like that about yourself again, i WILL.
one issue that does concern me , is the question that popped up about if a wb has all 3 os´s does it get more credit instantly due to haveing all os´s as opposed to another skin that only has w7?
not sure if that will be the case...but if it is, that will be weird if its going to be an open os for wb (if that is decided)

seems fair to me.

-So a guy(or gal) that can´t afford or for some other reason can´t do that they should be less credited ??
"Seems fair" to you ???
Edit: The most "Fair" acchievable is to probably have Win 7 as the only Os to skin.

Mhh most skinners still have vista or XP and / is still not cheap...that everyone can afford it
just make it easy : 3 sections XP Vista and W7
skins that pop out in each section will be hold against the top skins of the other 2 OS sections while the uploader decieds/defines clearly what OS should be overviewed in advance...XP - WURSTA - or W7
This way you can skin all three of them if you like but only the one you upload to willl be picked as reference... and compared to other skins and that is fair...
Since we all want as many participants as possible i think thats the way to go...And even if the judges would prefer a skin with all 3 of them skinned it is skill what decieds in the end and creativity + if its a everyday usage skin thing whatever...
Even if im more interested in the IP section
will be Epic hopefully...

I started skinning while on Vista, so the sections for 7 & Vista seem very natural to me. It's skinning XP that I find difficult. It's all about what you're used to, methinks.
I wholeheartedly agree.
