Viruses, spyware and herpes are quite common these days. All can be picked up online easily enough

Xiandi, if you already have >NET 3.5 or 4.0, and don't have MS Office, don't ler MS update yhem. It's always better to wait a month and then check to see if there were problems with them. Do the security patches (you are savvy, so make the updaye utility list the updates and tell you what they are.
Also, MS will try to give you ie9. If you're on and x32 (486) system, it's ok... ugly, but ok. If you're on and x64, though... nix it. It's very slow and broken.

Also beware of Office 2010 SP1, it really has big issues. Access is essential for me, but SP1 brings contant database crashes all the way. MS has provided an SP1 uninstall tool already, which itself is notable I think.

Yup, Windows Update sucks bowling balls through drinking straws.... but still it only slightly sucks compared to Po`
Last Windows Update broke my System Restore points.

Just tons of them., then restart, configuring, reboot, more configuring, more updates, more restarts, more configuring, SP1, Sp2, more updates...more reboots..blah blah blah...
Fortunately, I bought a 2TB external that I am going to back up all my OS' to in one fell swoop as soon as Vista is done, WB, SKS, Photoshop etc installed.
No biggie, just felt like venting.

not sure if this is safe or not but, I usually only update important files, even those I try to look closely at. You can hide the IE9 update with a right click. the only optional updates I generally select are driver updates for hardware.

vStyler: Doing the hard way, right ? Ever heard of Slipstreaming ? Or just borrow a Vista with SP2 DVD from one of Your friends and install with YOUR serial. No need to start in the stone-age for a re-install and waste hours for service packs.

Yeah, I hate that part of it... sucks big time. I'm the family go-to man when puters go wrong, and I can't begin to estimate how much bandwidth I've used to download all the updates each time. Fortunately I have the separate service packs saved to disc for XP, Vista and Win 7, so it's all the security updates and patches each time.
Now there's a thought! I could slipstream the service packs and create a disc of each OS with more up to date patches and etc.

I DL'd that from Technet the other day and stuck it on my Lappy....brought it to its knees...slow as a wet week.
Did a restore to prior...on the off chance it really WAS Office 2010 Pro Plus/whatever.....it was.
So stuck 2007 Ult on it instead....right as rain....

They must have screwed up Office 2010. Back when it was in beta, had no problems with it.
Libré works great, as does Open Office. Jarte has skins, but takes some getting used to.

yeah, just didnt have an available disc...unfortunately..Sp2 done now, updating turned off....

Ditto. I just did a factory recovery on a Toshiba laptop w/Win7 this week for my neighbors mom and my aunts HP desktop which wouldn't boot. Both needed updating when I finished.
Next week it's back to my mothers to update her rig she takes to Florida for the winter. (Yeah, takes the PC to Florida and leaves her tech shivering in Illinois....Thanks Mom!)

i never really update unless the software breaks and only works from that update
