Idea for a European meeting

Sunday, September 2, 2001 by MadIce | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

In the last couple of days an idea was born to try to get the European skinning community together.

The idea is not to make it a full blown convention, but to the make it an informal gathering. The people I spoke to often know each other for a long time, but have met on the internet only. They feel it would be fun to meet each other face to face.

Problem with an international meeting is in which European country do we hold such a meeting? A lot of European skinners/developpers/users come from the UK, but a lot of others come from different European countries like Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Poland (to name a few).

I have spoken with some of you and we feel that Belgium would be a great place to hold that meeting. Belgium is a central place for most Europeans and better still the food is great and its beer is the best in the world

And oh, I know that you all want to stay in your home country, but can we for once drop such a discussion and agree that Belgium is the country to hold the meeting? Saves us a lot of talk. Let's focus on the fun Mind you, I am not from Belgium.

Another aspect is what date would be the best. A lot of people may already have appointments in the near future, so I feel that doing it overnight is not a good idea. How about the end of october? You will have enough time to create a space in your agenda.

Since a lot of people need to travel, it would be best to do it in a weekend, so that we can book a hotel for one or two nights.

The people that are interested so far in such a meeting are Alberto (Italy), Yoran (France), pjpowell (UK), GreenReaper (UK) and me (the Netherlands).

There is some organization involved and I am willing to do that.

How about it? Will you join us? Any suggestions?

Oooh! Add me to your list - kwee2 from France. I'm there! I think Belgium is the perfect meeting place and the fact that you came up with this idea is just too great! EVen though I'm fairly new to the skinning community and still have beginner status, I would love to meet others who share the same passion for this wonderful domain.

I think it's a great idea, and I agree that being quite central, Belgium is a good place to hold it. Unfortunately, I would not be able to attend, as it's just too far to travel for me. I couldn't justify the cost, and the time away from my work and family.

Ah. Too bad BoXXi. Would be great to see you there.

Ryan - You are from the UK? Great to have you there.

How about arriving there on a saterday afternoon. We can all have dinner together and have the whole evening in front of us. For those that want to spend the night there, I can arrange an accomodation. Since I cannot look into your wallet, I shall examine several variants from which you can select.

Please send me an e-mail with your name and a way to contact you, so I can send you the details.

I can see it already:

MadIce: "Hi!"
Snowman: "Hi!"

[five minutes later]

MadIce: "..."
Snowman: "..."
MadIce: "How 'bout another beer then?"
Snowman: "Okay"

[five minutes later]

MadIce: "Well, let's call it a day"
Snowman: "Alright, bye!"

Craeonics: If that happens then there is always plan B. It is fairly simple. The stuff that makes you talk when there is nothing to discuss is called "LaChouffe" (Belgium's best beer). About the time that you have enough of it then you wouldn't be able to talk anyway. So, I see no problem whatsoever.

Best beer on the planet is called Coopers Vintage...[aged/fermented in the bottle]...

BTW: There are a lot of different great brands of beer there, so there is with a bit of luck Plan C. Infact brands enough for the entire alphabet.

Nice Idea ! As I travel to Belgium from Germany 2-3 times a year for different festivals and concerts why not go there for a skinners-meeting ? What city did You think of ? Brussels ? I know a nice bar there to meet in, and it is skinned outside... (The DNA - bar)

Can we change that skin? Next thing we need is a section "Skinned bars" in WinCustomize.
