how many downloads does it take till you know you'v made a successful skin.

As long as you like it that's the main thing. If one other person likes it as well then that's even better. So 1.

for me, i have to say 300 
each of my skins so far has reached the 300 mark, one or two are hovering around the 305 mark

Count the number of letters in the name of your skin.
Multiply it by the number of bytes in the skin size.
Divide this by pi.
Now take this value and add to it the number of colors in your skin. If your skin uses blue then add an additional 17 to the total.
This will give you a base line value for the skin popularity.
Multiply the result by your height (in units of inches).
If the result is less than the number of the skin 's downloads then you have a succesful skin.
Multiply it by the number of bytes in the skin size.

my very first skin was Create date: 8/2/2001 10:23:56 and it has had over 160 downloads is that good or what?????

if one person likes your work enough to download it and share in the thing that you have made, then it is a raving success.

It's usual when you upload a skin, this have a lot of downloads (by other skinners, i think). It's a good skin if it has a minimum of downloads any day, over 20 in Wincustomize Winamp section, over 100 in Winamp.com.
