WindowFX 4 Beta Update (v3.91)

Friday, November 5, 2010 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize News

A new beta of WindowFX 4 is available on Impulse for Object Desktop subscribers.  WindowFX 4 is a new application which brings cool animations and functionality to the Windows interface.

This beta update includes:

  • Added new animations : expand / shrink to/from screen, slide from/to left, right, bottom, top and random
  • Added option to indicate to the user that the window flick they tried cannot be applied
  • Added flicks to move windows to monitor above / below
  • Modified flicks for moving monitors to move the window the correct amount
  • Tweaks for explorer not responding on shutdown
  • Fixed problem with close animation sometimes causing missing windows later
  • Fixed 'disco effect' on firefox minimizing when using darken inactive windows
  • Fixed bug with auto minimize impacting WindowFX config window if left open and active
  • Fixed inactive window transparency causing problems when a window is minimized and restored
  • Possible fix for problems with hibernation. If you're still having trouble, we need details on the settings enabled in WindowFX and if it happens with a quick laptop cover shut, or if there are additional repro steps.

Okay, this is a great version... just one request though. If I "make windows under the active window darken to draw attention to the window with focus" in the "Inactive windows" tab then also the destop is darkened if I have programs running while everything is minimized. If all programs running are minimized I would like the desktop not to be darkened (there is no windows having focus at that moment, so darkening the desktop has no use).

What I would really like to see in this already great program is a slider for each animation to individually adjust animation speeds. Also, another great minimize/restore animation would be to have the window appear to twist around/flip over on the vertical axis as it moves to/from the taskbar.

Most issues with the first beta seem to be resolved on my system, yet I am still having to restart my laptop after it it goes into hibernation, as it doesn't come out of this state properly with WindowFX 4 enabled. I would be happy to just disable the program to avoid the problem, but every time I do, then click on anything on the startmenu/taskbar, it crashes windows explorer and I have to wait for it to restart.

On XPP SP3, ATI Radeon X1300PRO.  Background dimming and inactive window trans enabled.  No transitions enabled.  Current Windowblinds beta running.

Getting single bright flicker of dimmed parent window when mouse-over tooltip appears in child window.  No such flicker when tooltips appear over SysTray or QL tray items or TaskBar buttons.  Also getting a lot of brief transition video artifacts/black areas when moving from window to window.  Portion of taskbar right-click menu overlying the taskbar disappears after about 10 seconds (I know - who leaves the taskbar right-click menu active for 10 seconds? It was an accident.).  Annoying/bothersome enough behavior that I've disabled WFX.  Very cool features which I would definitely use if they were smooth/seamless.

FWIW.  I know it's a 'Jurassic' rig.
