filter - rating - XP

Thursday, June 21, 2001 by enz | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

It seems its not only me who's upset by all this XP stuff. going through some off the areas I noticed that most of the stuff I don't like is rated below 5 anyway, and reading the 'about' section I learn, that exiles and vistors are somehow privilged.
They do not have to see all this crap (sorry). So what about a filter option for all the others to see only skins rated above 2,3,4,5....
I understand that we should actualy be the ones who rate the skins, which we can't do if we don't see them. Therefore a great feature of the site would be that once one rated a skin below lets say 5 it would by default be no longer displayed unless s|he activley selects to see all!
OK there might be an issue with performance than, but maybe u have an idea, but it might be an option in the account settings for users who do have a good connection and therefore don't realy care about performance.
and hey just remembered, you can only rate a skin once so you have the info if I rated a skin already anyway...
PLEASE give it a thought;).

If ratings are ever used for filtering purposes, then I think the filtering options should also include usage and downloads.

One quick thought about ratings: in a lot of sports using judges, the top score and the lowest score are eliminated and the average is calculated on the remaing scores. What about something like this for the ratings? I would suggest the top 10% rates and the bottom 10% votes be not calculated into the overall ratings.
Example: if 100 persons have rated a skin, the top 10 scores and the bottom 10 scores are eliminated, and the average is calculated amoung the remaining 80 people.

Also, I strongly think ratings should NOT be anonymous. I think a lot of people are too mean when hiding behind the mask of anonymity.

I doubt it's worth implementing a controversial ratings system (justified or not). The current XPmania is a faze and will fade like all others.

After it's over just sort catagories by alphabetical accending and it will take you forever to hit XP stuff anyway

Taking up on Paxx's point I agree with him as it is not fair that people can hide behind a vail of obscurity, when voting for a skin,. Because it and they are anonynous. It lets people judge things harshly or mean in their vote.

I ALSO think that a system should be brought in where a person can only make one comment per skin. And that there comments should be moderated to make sure it is within the guidlines of this web site. So authors are NOT harrased or recieve Malicious abuse to them personally or their work. After all We want everyones experience to be an enjoyable one dont we ? Not to leave the site feeling hurt and never wanting to come back here.

so Comments should be moderated too, and the offending comments can then be hidden according to preference. JARK has it right on this as they plan to introduce this.

Maybe one solution that would fix all this is an "XP" section of the site where all things XP reside. I'm not a huge fan of the XP design in general, it's too chunky, but a lot of people do like it. The problem for me comes when I go to look through a section, and citing ObjectBar as the worst, there's NOTHING but XP skins which are all identical apart from colour. I don't mean to disrespect the authors, as I'm all too aware of the amount of work it takes to put a skin together, but themes that are changed so minorly should either be updated or released in a single pack. Enough variations of XP WindowBlinds/ObjectBars/DesktopX already.

...Like on deviantart ? where you can but all your deviations into one pack ? This would be an idea to be able to do that sort of thing here I think

I did have a word with one of the OB Luna Authors and encouraged him to do some other work now as people are fed up of all this XP stuff. Particulary in the OB section. He promised he would

Anyway Even if many authors within the community hate XP, and I think I know why by now, the public do like it. A site such as this should have variaty and if people want their PC to look like an OS then thats up to them. Variation is needed yes, that is why I also see now that XP has been flogged to death, but it seems XP will be around for a while longer yet. Although the fact is is that once XP is here I dont think there will be as many XP releated skins. Implimenting new idea's now just to find ways of hiding an XP style skin is a futile Idea in the fact that XP will not be dominating the Community forever, and this is only a short term craze that has happened. Give it time people, and things will return to normal.

..Another thought springs to mind also, and I was just talking to another skinner about this, on messenger, is that when XP arrives what is the BET that people dont use Luna !

They will search Microsofts themes download site for different ones. Other than Luna and yes it is to blame on the fact that people took their enthusiastic idea too far.

Another interesting thing I just heard about MS is that they wont be allowing the software Skinning programs to do theme's for XP, out to people other than Software developers ? What ! This seems a bit unfair...

I for one wish all OS ports would vanish! ALL of them!

Yes, that was the plan with XP all along. I remember reading when the first beta was released that it was a "fully skinnable OS", but so people didn't make skins that would presumably cause problems for the OS, Microsoft would be the only maker of these skins, because as we all know, when it comes to writing flawless software, MS is infallible

forget all the XP and rating stuff for a moment... I personaly only want to see skins I like when I go to different sections! Now how can this be possible? Well either with rating or to avoid a huge discusting rating discussion with a checkbox to mark skins visbile or hidden on personal account level!
So I hide (rate bad, cause I don't like) a skin, therefore I ('I') don't see it the next time I go to the according section.
That should be easily possible and reversible.
