Is it a bug with Iconpackager or is it me being stupid????????

Saturday, December 27, 2003 by Leo the Lion | Discussion: Skinning

I have been trying to update the iCandy Junior Icon packager themes with all the new custom file types which have been released by FOOOD in the past few days however i have run into the following problem. There are about 50 file types and when i customize the file types and save them into the package all seems well however when i reload the package or swop to another package and then return to the iCandy package some of the file types have miraculously changed!!!.

This problem seems to particulary affect the individual files for Midi sequence, Movie clip, Video clip and wave sound and vertually all the Winamp file types plus a few of the images files.

This is driving me nuts..........perhaps i have had too much Christmas beer

Anyway i removed all the other Iconpackage themes and just played with this one and still no joy. I then totally rebuilt my icon cache still no joy. I then uninstalled Iconpackager and reinstalled from scratch and guess what same problem.

I am praying this is something simple that i cannot see but i have got a sneeking suspicion that Iconpackager cannot take what i am throwing at it.

I would love someone to point out the error of my ways before i go totally mad

Are you saying the icons on your computer change, or the icons within the IconPack change? If the former, I've always had that problem with some file types such as image files. (If I change the icon for BMP, JPG, and Gif change too.) If the icons are changing within the pack, that's spooky.

Wish you well on your journey and look forward to this package when it is complete.

Are you doing your work on a fresh install of XP? If not some unknown default in your registry may have been altered that Icon Packager cannot restore. I previously had a problem with the icon WinXP uses to show MS-DOS .exe's and MS-DOS .com's not being able to be changed to anything not even back to the original icons, not matter what I did with Icon Packager, eventually I had to restore my C:\ partition from a backup to fix the problem. I don't think it's a problem with Icon Packager itself.

Just my two cents, hope it gives you something fresh to think about or try

Stephen........I think i have suceeded however i need someone to test the package before i upload it. There are 140 icons in the package and its about 10MB zipped. Can you or is there anyone else out there able to help me with a test please. Someone with a broadband connection would be best. There were two issues with the icons that i need someone to look at before i unleash them. I will obviously need someone with their email address on their profile.

Sorry...didn't realise you were still sending it of to IR to test it out. I thought IR had already tested it and you were uploading it to WC.

essencay......There are people climbing up my door and garden fences to get hold of this

There will be 2 versions just like the originals - Blue Folder and Yellow Folder - both will have loads and loads of file types skinned with FOOOD's brand new icons plus i have rippped the old packages apart and totally re-schemed them to blend better. As soon as IR has got the blue version and played with it and answered a few of my queries they will be put up. The packages are all ready to go, new library screen shots have been done so the whole shooting match is ready bar a couple of areas that need loooking at.

As a matter of interest i have been playing with the yellow version and all the icons are there but after an initial load which went quite easily i have seen 3 different versions of the same package - the more i look at this the more i think that there are some conflicts going on in the Iconpackager software which will need looking at by Stardock.

IR are you up and about yet as i need you to look at this when you can?

IR........your "package" should be with you by now. Now go get your self a large mug of strong coffee and have a play. As i mentioned before first things first - i would like to know how the installation went. After you have had a play and a look around it i need you to look for faults. I don't mind any critisism. I then need to ask you some questions about what you are seeing. I will pop back in a while to see how you are getting on. I really appreciate this IR as i don't want to "float" such a large package without some testing as if people start finding faults after a 10MB download they will want to throw me to the dogs
