Is it a bug with Iconpackager or is it me being stupid????????

Saturday, December 27, 2003 by Leo the Lion | Discussion: Skinning

I have been trying to update the iCandy Junior Icon packager themes with all the new custom file types which have been released by FOOOD in the past few days however i have run into the following problem. There are about 50 file types and when i customize the file types and save them into the package all seems well however when i reload the package or swop to another package and then return to the iCandy package some of the file types have miraculously changed!!!.

This problem seems to particulary affect the individual files for Midi sequence, Movie clip, Video clip and wave sound and vertually all the Winamp file types plus a few of the images files.

This is driving me nuts..........perhaps i have had too much Christmas beer

Anyway i removed all the other Iconpackage themes and just played with this one and still no joy. I then totally rebuilt my icon cache still no joy. I then uninstalled Iconpackager and reinstalled from scratch and guess what same problem.

I am praying this is something simple that i cannot see but i have got a sneeking suspicion that Iconpackager cannot take what i am throwing at it.

I would love someone to point out the error of my ways before i go totally mad

I havnt dealt with icons much (yet).144 icons all the way to 128,...still I was suprised at the unzipped file size...21.9 mb's...is that normal? What are the larger icons for?

This is my email to IR in reply to his so anyone else who might like to throw in any imput is welcome
IR..............OK.........some of that is good:-

1. Did it install OK..........did you have to "faf" about with it or did it go straight into IP?

2. IE shortcuts problem is a known problem and the only way round them is to do it manually.

3. Can you show Network connections in your Start Panel. This will bring up Connect to in your Start Panel. What icon can you see beside it - is it a blue folder with a "world" in front of it because it should not be it should be a phone socket as per icon 37. This has really got me going nuts as i have tried to change this several times to no avail.

4. Winamp file types - Come out of IP and go back into it again and load iCandy up again and then go to the file types and have a look at all the music files for winamp. There are quite a few file types. Do these match now. Give it a couple of goes and when they do match then have a look at all the other file types and if all now match hit apply. OK IP and then go back in and see if they have remained constant and correct.

5. What icons are showing on media clip, wave sound, video clip and midi sequence?

6. PSD icon............is that a file type icon i can see in your screenshot............If you follow 4. above hopefully that will rectify it.

7. Zip files.............does it change all your zip files...........What Zip utility are you using............This package is not skinning my Zips and i am using Object Zip..........i wonder if i have missed a file type although there are two .zip files in the file types of which one will not skin however hard i try it.

Thats all i can think of at the moment.............thanks once again and i really appreciate it. Await to hear from you. Leo.

The 128 X 128 icons you can use to convert into dock icons

I would almost rather see the large ones released separately as a pack or individual icons. That would cut back on the file size a LOT.Not important to me,but... Plus128(to me ) is the minimum size for a dock icon, they look better larger.I guess what I meant was, besides OD,is there a use for 96 and 128 icons?Really,I dont know.I never see any larger than 48 on my pc,but I know you can push them up to64.I just never have.

Just another thought to anyone............when you put a package together you have to put in info re author etc etc when you save the package.....there is a little box at the end which says windows xp only which you have to tick or not.........does this have any effect on your icons?

This is IR's mail to me

It installed fine, but it dosnt show as an IP package, just a regular zip.Still it installed fine from IP.Just clicking on it from the desktop didnt work.I see phone socket. Some zip icons stay the same(oddbal zip formats that never change anyway). All the regular zip files are showing the new icon. All movie clips,tv shows etc.. show as wmv.All the others are fine(mp3,midi,wav,etc..)#4 I'm not sure about yet...still IP should display the correct icon(or at least not change it to the wrong icon). Most users dont want (nor should they have to)to fiddle with individual icons everytime they change themes.

IR you have been a great help and confirmed some of the problems that i could not decide whether they were just on my 'puter or what.....and you have certainly fiven me FOOOD for thought - 'cuse the pun

IR - if there is anything else you think of chuck it at me

I think i am going to leave a message on the general board to see if anyone else has any imput as well as it seems a lot of people a lot of people hardly frequent the skinning board.

I am not going to put these packages up until they are right and i am not far off

If you are using a lot of icons have you thought about increasing the size of the icon cache?
