The New My Skins page

Thursday, April 29, 2010 by kenwas | Discussion: WinCustomize 2011 Feedback

Thanks for getting this up and running.  Well done!

I have a question about the new column called Approved.

All of my offerings are marked "No" in this column.  Shouldn't this be "Yes" because journeyman uploads are automatically "approved" ?

Not trying to nit pick as I am sure you have your hands full with important fixes.  Just raised the question for your awareness.

For those that do not know how to get to the page, click your screen name at the top of the home page right before My Site.

Then select the My Skins List on the right side of the page that opens.

You asked the question I wondered about, kenwas. What does the approved column mean?

Much better than the other "My Skins" page!   The only thing missing is a comments flag. Other than that great job guys!

If there is a new comment it is marked in () in the same column as the older comments.  It is a flag of sorts and seems to work well.

what he said   it should tell you exactly how many of the comments on a skin are new/you haven't seen

Ahhh...I did not know that!

Update: Just letting you know I had some comments in new submissions but no flag () showing them. I found them just by checking.

you have to have visited the page for the skin at least once (since this update was put up, not retroactively) for the new comments field to show changes...  I'm guessing this was something uploaded before the changes were made live?

Ok goober moment here...are you saying that I have to visit each of my submission at least once before it will show that I have comments? If that's true that kind of defeats the purpose of having the "flag" show. Also will we be getting email notifications back? If we get those back I won't need the flag thing...since I only used that when the notices stopped working for whatever reason.

Kind of.  On the new site when you upload a new skin it takes you to the page where that skin will be once its approved.  That should be enough for the system to start keeping track of comments.  Again you need to be using the same browser as it's cookie based and will store different info for different browsers.

Thus from a functional standpoint all you should have to do is upload a skin and check your list in the future.  For ones rolled over from the old site you will have to look at them once.

So, if I have got this straight, .. all I need to do is visit all 215 or so skins I have.. at least one time?

On a positive note, the notification seems to work well, cheers.

I'm confused to say the least...cookie based?..per browser?...what happens if you clear your cookies?

There are only two ways for me to track a new comments flag for you guys.  Either I base it on the last time you viewed the My Skins page or I base it on the last time you actually viewed the skin.

I considered doing it based on the My Skins page, however, this means if you were to page through your results or reload the page before going and looking at the skins that said they had new comments on them it would count those comments as 'viewed' and say you have no new comments.  Also you would still have to at least page through all the pages of your my skins list to get this info updated.  If people would really prefer this I supposed I could convert the system over for this.  Basing it on the last skin view will give more accurate/real data.

No matter how its implemented it wont be able to save your comment number history if you clear your cookies.

I think it should be based on the MY Skins page, but that is only one mans opinion.

I thought of a way to quasi fix it to be a mash up of both styles...  I'll try to implement it on Monday, will take more time.

There has to be some other way of doing this. Having a cookie to track comments kept on a users local PC is just not going to work. If they clear there cookies they have to re-initiate one for each of their submissions? Over and over again? Or if they want to check the site from a different computer, they have to create cookies on it to track their comments? Come on now, maybe try talking to other programmers, there has to be another way.  I know my site and vStyler's (I maintain both), track new comments, forum posts, everything.  It tracks it in a different way, but maybe if you talk to someone over at e107.org they might be able to help you out with some coding changes.  The way of talking about doing it is just not going to work at all.  All you will have is a lot of complaining users.

If you can just set it up so that I get an email notification when anyone leaves a comment on any one of my submissions that will be all I'd need.  I have close to 400 uploads and I really have no desire to have to go visit them all over again.

And this really doesn't seem to be working. I've visited my newer submissions numerous times for comments and have always found some but there was no "flag" letting me know they were there except for just now when "I" left a comment...then it showed a flag...letting me know "I" left a comment...but nothing for the previous 3 comments I found on my own.

On a side note...the thing I don't understand is the way it was set up before worked great...someone leaves a comment...you simply get notified by email...comment is replied to...done...why is that no longer doable?
