WindowBlinds 4: PREVIEW!

Sunday, January 12, 2003 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

Next week users of Object Desktop (www.objectdesktop.com) will be getting the first ALPHA of WindowBlinds 4.

The full preview guide of WindowBlinds 4 is here:
http://www.windowblinds.net/wb4

Major new features of WindowBlinds 4 are:

* Much faster than WindowBlinds 3 or Windows XP's own built in visual styles
* Higher level of compatibility with wacky applications that do non-standard things.
* Skins more elements of Windows including the Explorer task panel (shellstyles) WITHOUT requiring any hacking of shellstyle DLL.
* Can skin new elements like log off screens and other parts that one might not imagine.
* Plus it skins a host of other things users have long asked for.

WindowBlinds 4 will be the most significant engine upgrade to WindowBlinds since the original 1.0. Faster, smaller, more features.

WoW!! I can't wait! One thing I would like to know.... Will SkinStudio be upgraded to make it easier to take advantage of these new functions, or does the present version have the capability to do it?
(Also Brad, DesktopX 2 doesn't appear in my component manager, is there anywhere else I can get it? I tried everything!)

Yes. SkinStudio version 3 is also in the works and it is a MAJOR overhaul.

We are also working on something called the metaformat. A kind of universal skin format that SkinStudio 3/4 would be able to compile into a skin for a target program.

How does the ability to skin the logon screen affect logonXP?

actually, it skins the log -off- screens, the little blue dialogs that pop up when you choose log off or shutdown from the start menu. Course, they only appear if you have the logon screen enabled, which means they're definitely related.

I just hope the stupid 'please wait' box gets skinned, or hit by a truck, or something.

I know this may seems two small things, but theyve always seemed SO out of place to me not skinned, especially as more and more other elements get skinned....
- The edges of textboxes similar to comboboxes
- Combobox scrollbars (i know theyve been trouble, optional?)

And one last pipe dream, any hope of the repositionable scroll bar arrows, to mimic Mac and Solaris and some other *nix shells??
Still can't wait either way!
