'A strong offense is the best defense'. When we again show ourselves as a strong united nation, we will see the terrorists as less of a threat. During and through WWI and WWII, Americans pulled together, and showed their resolve. Why is it that it takes a catastrophic event to re-unite us?
Thoughts for you to peruse..

The only thing I can see that *might* have helped stop this before it happened would be a better intelligence service. But even then, there are limits. Already, it's not really possible to increase security beyond what is current without inconveniencing a lot of people, or costing a *lot* of money (and airlines aren't going to pay - most of them are almost broke).
It may be that the risk of this is one of the costs of having such a free society. If so, the only way to stop it happening again would be by making everyone in the world like America and it's people enough they wouldn't want to attack or by taking decisive action against the people who really don't like the US, *before* they make their move. And to do that, you need to know who they are, not that you can blow them up if they tell you.

By no means were my comments to suggest that a stronger military would have prevented this, terrorism is terrorism-unpredicatable. However, passive response often begets more aggression. We have been (in the US) a passive nation for many years, as we think of ourselves as the 'holier-than-thou' keepers of civil liberties.
If we had been more of a nation of 'lets all be one and like everyone else' we would never have become an independent nation (from England) in the first place.
Might and power are often very unpleasant topics, but it is the law of nature (or the 'circle of life' if you prefer) that the strongest will and most often do survive.
If the threat of military offensive actions were greater, perhaps the terrorists behind this would have thought twice - or perhaps the country harboring them would have thought twice, about harboring them. If a bully picks a fight with you in the school yard (as I teach my kids), you should walk away. If he follows you home, you do your best to avoid a fight. When he attacks you, you defend yourself. If it happens all over again the next day, you attempt to beat the crap out of him. At some point it becomes do-or-die, and you must fight back.

But on a sad note. I spoke with my former boss today. She said that the company did have a small training meeting scheduled for today on the 106th floor. Some one in the local office spoke with a woman just after the first plane hit. She said that everyone would get out and call back. No one heard from them again.
It has been said that everyone knows someone that was impacted from today's events. In fact the whole world has been impacted. No one did anything back in 1993 when the bomb went off in the parking garage. It was "let's get back to business as usual." We see results of that decision.
"If you want peace, you must prepare for war." That may sound like backwards logic, but it is the only way to truly live. Or in other words, "The needs of the many out-weigh the needs of the few." Our servicemen need to be supported for the work they do. They give up a lot to make sure their country can continue to enjoy peace. It is exactly because they had so many cuts that Terrorism has been allowed to fester and grow like a cancer on the world.
In all this tradegy, unsung heros are being created. I applaud the staff of Stardock for DOING something positive. We should all do something that helps. That is the real power of America. That is the real power of any country hit by terrorism.
My prayers are with the vicitims (that is all of us too). May God grant us peace through positive personal action. (If not you, then who?)

Well, I think no matter where you are in the world you have a lot to think about, especially if your country is allied to America. I know my country [Australia] is and altohugh we're not directly affected, we are certainly obliged to be involved if there is a conflict. That puts us directly in danger. I just hope Bush is rational about the whole incident, personally i don't trust the guy, but i guess we'll all just have to wait and see.
Shit everything looks so different since i saw that report last night....

I wish that will be the last time. I wish the terrorism should be put to halt. This is unbearable.
