a meditation on favoritism...

Friday, June 8, 2001 by kenray | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

firstly, don't get me wrong.
as a practicing Nazerite, i would love it if i could show my Bible at teh QT Mart and get half off my cigarettes...

Whilst browsing the coolplayer section, i notice a subset for "Christian"

does this not invite the question,
"If we subset for one religion, should we not subset for all?"

why not a "Hindu" section, or a "Buddhist" section, or a "Jewish" seciton?
Are we Christians so prevalent and artistically active that we deserve a subset?
Or is this a nod to the English speaking, Western Hemispherical crew who dominate this side fo the planet?

Don't get me wrong. I practice, adn i pray, and I love the special treatment.
Still, soemhting about that just doesn't strike me as fair.

"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Yep, thats what HE said.

I wasn't sure what you were on about kenray and then I spotted the category you're pointing out. It's in some other sections too.

I suppose you could change it to "Religious" to welcome all faiths but then the section would probably be the site of a terrible war...

Hey, I want a Jainist section too then? And how about the paganists, tribalists, animists, shintoists and what not? And let's not forget us atheists as well!

Sooo, changing the name to "religion" might be a good idea. I think people can be mature enough not to let that turn into a religious dispute.

On the other hand, no need to act politically correct here, right?

Yes, renaming the category "Religious" may be better.

Hey, I got a question: are the religion icons trademarked?

The Christian section came about as a result of Dashboard. When Dashboard was brought in I duplicated the sections that were on Snoopsofts site. And with the new applications I have been just copying those sections.

But for the sake of arguement and speaking as a Christian..."Thou shall have no false God's before me"...so as a Christian there is no other category for Religion. Unless we were to have Catholics, Baptist, Protestants, etc..So as a Christian I cannot put other gods before my God.

A man requested:
Tell my brothers to divide my fathers things with me.

Jesus replied:
Who made me a divider? Turning to his disciples, he said: Do i divide things up?

I also think that renaming the catagory to "religious" would be suitable.

But, see T-man, now you are "enforcing" that which you beleive on this website.
WHich may be your option, but is, nonetheless, ethically wrong.

Jesus's buddies often called him "Rabbi".
Why?
Cuz Jesus is a Jew, and a good Jew.
Well respected by His folks in His time.
So if you are to respect Jesus, you should
at least put up a "Judaism" section...

see what i mean?

Frankly, considering that this is a web site for use by the general skinning public, I find it unprofessional that the personal views of one person would be forced upon it, thereby ignoring the wishes and views of others. IMNSHO, either there should be a generic 'Religious' category or no mention of religion at all.

'Religion is the opiate of the masses'......
ergo...
Just call it 'Drugs'.....

can't we all just have a "Drink of choice" and be happy..

Belief ( no matter what it may be) is to each his or her own and it should not offend anyone else....

(just for the sake of debate)

Kenray:

Ethically wrong, I disagree, it is ethically right!

Definition of Ethic: the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and
obligation

It is my 'moral duty and obligation' as a deciple of Christ to spread the 'good' news of Jesus to others.

I believe you have confused Political Correctness with Ethics.

T-Man - I assume you were being cynical. At least, I hope so.

There was an issue in the courts about wether it was appropriate for a Texas high school to allow a student to say a pray over the PA at the begining of each football game. In the coverage a news channel interviewed several students and asked if they would mind if another faith was allowed to say a pray too, maybe rotate randomly as there were a couple other denominations that had asked for the privilige.

One of the student's responses was chilling. She said "I was raised to believe that my faith is the only true faith and any other faith is an abomination before my God. So, yeah, I'd have a big problem with that." I found this incredibly appalling to come from a child and a frightening indication of the failure of the major Christian religions to really teach any Christian values.

I hear the freemasons have a good way of dealing with the issue. They believe there is only one God, therefor, if you believe in God, no matter what you call Him, it's the same God. Because there is only one. All faiths coexist within their system.

Maybe the section could be called "sacred" as that is a commonly used category for any religious or spiritual subject in art.

I should have refreshed before posting... I see, T-Man you weren't being cynical, and I do not mean to offend.

The category label for a section really has nothing to do with one's fervor or faith.

Check yer dictionary Tman:
(american heritage dictionary*)

eth·ic n.

A set of principles of right conduct.
A theory or a system of moral values:

i beleive anyone with a system of good moral values would consider it a principal of "right conduct" not to force their beleiefs on anyone.

i also beleive anyone with a system of good moral values would consider it a principal of "right conduct" to respect the beleifs of others, whose beleifs differ from one's own...

Of course T-Man is being "the devil's advocate" if I may use this pun... He started every one of his post with "For the sake of argument".
He's just playing.

And by the same token, why should I have to be forced to accept others beliefs in their gods.
You say that I would be forcing my beliefs, but it is also working the opposite way. Where I am being forced to either hinder my beliefs or promote others beliefs.

If I concede to the belief that there is a place for other god's or my God does not exist then I am doing an imoral justice to Jesus, myself and those of the Christian faith and in doing so acting unethically. So in my view it would be 'righteous conduct' to promote my faith.

So, it appears in one way or another, that one of us will be 'forced' to accept the other persons belief. Unless of course we simply delete that sub category.
