What would you like to be skinnable in WindowBlinds that is not currently?
Monday, October 5, 2009 by Neil Banfield | Discussion: WindowBlinds
I have started this thread to get feedback from skin authors who would like to see a specific thing skinnable that is not currently skinnable, or not skinnable in the way they would like it to be.
Please post specifics, so "Allow all colours to be changed" is not good feedback. "Allow me to change the text colour on control X" is.
So please be very specific in your requests stating what part, what you would like to be able to do and most importantly why.
Pictures would be especially helpful.

Xiandi, fantastic points. All of them.
Overlays on "all" buttons. Taskbar, more than anything. My ultimate wish, would be to have animated overlays, but I don't see that happening for at least another 20 years or at all.

Explorer BGs should be able to use JPGs and PNGs instead of BMPs to reduce overall file size. (If you plan on using a non-repeating image).
IE8 should be completely skinnable. This is the reason why I still have IE7.
We should have a skinnable BG for message boxes instead of just being limited to a single color. (However, it might result in poor contrast when trying to read text.)
The skin recoloring should be more specific, such as excluding the min/max & close buttons. (i.e. When I change "Glassphire" from blue to green, the red "X" turns purple. The button should remain red regardless of the skin color.)

The button "glow" image should automatically recalculate itself to the size of the push button instead of being the same dimensions of the "glow" image itself.

The button glow should work on ALL push buttons. The push buttons on web browsers don't glow.
One more thing, the "Folders" pane in Vista should be skinnable as well, just like "Favorite Links".
That's all i have for now.

I havent tried this myself but cant that be solved with masks in SKS?

HSL recoloring lets you recolor a single color in a skin thus not affecting items of a different color like the close button.
not sure if 7 kept that feature and it doesn't work well in skins with gradients or very vivid existing default color schemes.

I think it might be beneficial also to have a separate image for the start button for the top taskbar. I mean, the top taskbar itself has its own image, right?

I agree with everyone else on this one. Especially skinning IE8 and having transparency in the navigation pane in Vista Explorer. I'd also like to see:
WMP 11 and 12 skinning.
Seperate "basic" taskbar/startmenu/pop up menu images for when the DWM can't run (in Vista).
Transparency in Vista window preiew borders (non-captioned window edge)
Ability to not have a gap between the edge of pop up menu background and the menu item.
Glass areas in Vista still go black when maximized where window borders don't. I'd also like to see an option to have Windows AND the taskbar go opaque when maximized (With the window colour and the reflection map like in aero)
If you notice the back/forward buttons are too far down so they overlap the window border. Could you fix it so that it's more like this:
in aero (<--) there's a nice gap between the the buttons and the bottom edge of the titlebar.
I'd also like an option to have the titlebar image stretch vertically in windows explorer instead of having seperate images for the glass toolbar and borders.
Have an option not to use "glass" window border images around glass menubars.
"glass" toolbar background.
Skin the scrollbars on Fences using the "glass" scrollbar images.
I'm using Vista at the moment so all the problems I refer to are with Vista (some may also appear in 7).

A seperate image for the start button for the vertical taskbar (see #4), so we can center it or not, depending on the blind.

I agree.

Not really a code-related thing, but still a missing feature I posted in another thread:
Change the opacity/transparency of textures. You can now apply a texture, WB7 uses a default opacity or blending mode for that, and THEN you can adjust the total transparency. But instead of remaking the texture all over again in Photoshop or anything alike, changing the transparency there, that option should be available in WB7 itself.
Edit: As quoted above, maybe it indeed is useful to have a separate start button for the vertical taskbar, which allows you to also place it wherever you want? I'd love to have the button at the bottom, then the time, and using a down-up allignement (spelling?), the actual dynamic taskbar buttons of applications and such.

This is also something I think is an important addition. So many times there are darker skins that are spectacular, till you try to view internet documents or title bars that have such dark text it's impossible to read them unless you highlight the text .
I would use quite a few more blinds than I currently do if I could create some kind of contrast between the text and the background .

1) Vista/7 get a nice glass border around these popups on the taskbar.. could these be skinned?
2) 7 has an outline similar to pinned taskbar items on tray items (on the taskbar and the systray popup) when hovered; it would be nice if these could be skinned too.

In addition, the Show Desktop button doesn't work with the mouse in the bottom right corner as it does with Aero (the cursor must be moved up a bit for it to activate). Could this please be fixed? The purpose of the button being moved in 7 is defeated with it like this.
Another thing that would be nice are the separators in the menu that appears when clicking the arrow next to the shutdown button in the Vista/7 start menu.
And slightly OT, it would be awesome if we could get the Skin Options popup back on right-clicking skins in WB7. Having to select a skin and move the cursor to the top of the window to delete it adds a lot of extra cursor motion compared to previous versions of WB.

I would also like more control over the search box on the Vista/7 start menu, like how LONG or TALL it is. And how far the "all programs list" is from each edge of the start menu (atm it is linked to how far the the mouseover item is)
I'd like to specify my own image for the shadows on pop up menus and the start menu and I'd like to be able to have huge shadows like on Mac OS X.
An OPTION to have a Fading start button and titlebar buttons (on perpixel frames)
Start menu launch animation (I always thought the start menu just appearing was a bit boring, although I'm a little unsure how much control I'd like to have)
Be able to customize the user icon frame in Vista and 7 (I'm probably not the only one who would like this feature), the default one just doesn't go with a lot of skins. I don't like the way on XP WindowBlinds always cuts the edges off the user icon that aren't on the "Top Part" image of the start menu.
I like the new UIS0 skins but I always liked putting my OWN images in, and UIS1 and 2 don't skin aero very well, I thought maybe you could have seperate images for stretched borders and just use the "Glass" borders for fully glass windows (like the gadget gallery) and aero peek windows.
When I apply the skin the colour the DWM adds to tramslucent windows is always set to the dialog background colour (which is grey for a lot of skins I use), I'd like to be able to set my own colour, maybe even a feature to pick the colour currently being used. For some reason if I change the colour AFTER I apply a skin it always resets to the grey when Explorer restarts, I lock my computer, resize or move my taskbar.
Perfect Mac OS X scrollbars - I did notice the "Sabretooth skin" I love the scrollbars, but I'd like to also be able to have the extended arrow buttons.

The ability to delete wallpapers from the WB wallpaper folder using WB configuration would be great. It's a pain to have to navigate to the folder for this task.I add walls through config (thanks for putting drag-and-drop for this back in)and usually use WB to manage and apply most of my WP's.

I would truly love to be able to make the icons in the folder pane in explorer bigger

I don't know if they already are or if it's possible (planning on getting OD in the next couple weeks once I have this semester's textbooks) but I'd like to see jump lists get skinned. (those things if you've pinned programs to the taskbar and right-click).
