Are you going to blame the medium for this, or realize that people meet up all the time, in a thousand different ways, and a few wind up killing and being killed, unfortunately.

For anyone to place any blame on a social networking site for either issue (unfortunate victim or psychotic murderer) would be incredibly ignorant, IMHO.

I also have a hard time understanding the purebreed social networks like facebook, myspace etc... i can understand boards like this where we actually have something we all like (digital arts/skinning/customizing).... but facebook and such just feels like a waste of time. IMO.... i even stopped using instant messengers.. i rather phone if i want to get a hold of someone... but atleast IM's have a clear use and purpose so i still give it a "non idiot stamp of approval if you use it" well enough ramblings

Actually the guy killed was identified just because of his profile up there, although they provide many security features such as only your friends can read your messages or see your photos but hackers seem to be smarter than them and alredy there are so many scripts all throughout the internet by which you can read messages or see locked orkut albums of any user.

While I had it (for all of about 2 days) I thought I had found my dad on Twitter, until I asked him if he was on it and he said, "what's Twitter?" That answered my question and confirmed to me yet again how pointless it is. I'm not much for drivel.

Isn't it time that people start interacting as much as they can with their families instead of getting incessant tweets from twits that you have to dispose of and pay for only to throw away? How about those "Non-disposables? Spouses, children and friends/loved ones!

Over the long term, generation to generation, communication always reduces ignorance, which reduces fear, which reduces hate, which improves the overall human condition.  As the world gets smaller, racism becomes harder and harder to justify, for example. 

There will always be sick people doing sick things.  It's just that today, it's easier to recognize them and catch them.  

And fear doesn't mean stupid.  I'm not afraid of anyone or anything, but that doesn't mean I walk down dark alleys in suspect areas of town with my wallet hanging out... 

The analogy holds for social networking sites etc.  Don't add a friend you don't know.  And even if you do, Try not to let your narcissism put your well being at risk.  The only general way we can help is to educate the new social networkers on what is safe to post and what it not, and why.

This doesn't sound like anyone "hacked" anything.  Just that she got befriended by a psycho.  Happens every day in real life, so it's bound to happen on the Internet.

If you live your life in fear, you will have lived no life at all.

Living is risk.  The odds of you being killed by a drunk driver and massively higher than being murdered by a serial killer you met online.  Do you stop driving, walking across the street, or going anywhere?  Of course not.

Politicians, priests, corporate advertising agencies, and now the ratings driven for dollars main stream media all use FEAR to control you, to make money and to hold power one way or another. 

I refuse to let them do this to me.  I won't be made afraid.
