New Star Trek Theme............
Sunday, March 15, 2009 by Leo the Lion | Discussion: OS Customization
Saw this on TSF today...........For all you Trekkies out there..........Don't turn this into a Hyperdesk 'bashing' thread, please. We went through that little immature debacle a few months ago. Just admire the creativity and even if you don't use Hyperdesk just admire the art work, cool icons and there's a free media player remote too.

It's nice, but with having subscriptions to ObjectDesktop Ultimate and WinCustomize I can't see paying out more money. Heck I caught some mild crap for not having Winstep. Can only afford to do so much.

do I need hyperdesk to use it, or is like mycolors where it just works?

The suite comes with the program/patch to apply it (it's not like windowblinds...the hypersuites are msstyles).
I never watched TOS (I'm a Voyager fan) but the window frames on those themes are just so large, takes up too much space for me. The Windows themes from those hypersuites are a bit too plain and generic, they all kinda look alike. But the icons...always top notch (walls look good too).

long live to Windowblinds

As always, the SkinsFactory have put some quality work into this theme and it looks good, but sadly it's only for XP and Hyperdesk.
Yeah, that was most unfortunate. Despite what people might think of SkinsFactory thoughts and ideas, they're a bunch of talented artists/skinners, and the skinning community doesn't need that sort of thing dividing it. Personally, I miss the SkinsFactory's WB's and themes, but alas, I don't see them doing them again any time soon.

Big huge "start" button FTL. START is sooo XP and old. Less is more.

At first glance the hyperdesk themes look awesome...but once you get past the icons they seem to drop the ball. If the rest of the skins looked as good as the icons they'd have a hit.

Icons Look cool. The buttons in the theme IMO look out of place. To me it would have looked better with LCARS style of buttons like in the task bar, instead of the Big "Candy drop" looking ones there now. All in all it looks cool other than the Candy style buttons.
Tho I am drooling over this.. would love to see a matching WB for it..

That's a step in the right direction, and one I'm sure many Vista users will welcome and appreciate.
Hopefully the SkinsFactory will consider doing WindowBlinds again someday soon.

So I've heard... Good post. Doing Hyperdesk for XP makes sense, after all, it's about 50% of the market at this point. Never got into msstyles...heard not good things from a friend about treatment of customers (I'm NOT referring to Hyperdesk).
The thing that bothers me most, though is that like MacD, the burger you get doesn't really look like the one in the pic.
With the artistic talent here, I bet a TOS skin could come out as good as or better

I think you may be referring to TGTSoft and its flagship app, StyleXP here... they were operational one day and gone the next, without as much as a by your leave or thank you to their loyal customer, and worst of all, NO notice or warning.
I read/heard of cases where people requiring support received no replies to emails they had sent, not even an automated: "Sorry but we've gone out of business" , to explain the absence/lack of support.
I have a copy of StyleXP I can no longer use after reinstalling my OS (need a new installation No). Oh well, it's no great loss, I've since discovered WindowBlinds and find it to be the superior UI customisation tool all-round. Besides, WB doesn't hack system files so is the safer option anyway.

Pretty sure it was msstyles....

msstyles is actually the theme manager MS provides with Windows XP.... the hacked file (from which StyleXP is fashioned) allows users to apply themes other than those supplied by MS. I don't know off-hand who came up with the original hack, but it was available in various releases and iterations from several sources. So while there were a couple of companies other than TGTSoft who released programs based on the hack, the hack itself was fairly generic and most popular because it was free and available from several freeware sites, whereas StyleXP and the others weren't.
The greatest number of customer complaints that I know of, however, were against TGTSoft, though those were mainly for abandoning customers when it suddenly shut up shop without warning.

Can always buy the suite, install it on an XP machine, and hack it into a WB... (If they actually release the vista version it would obviously be a better suite to start with.. ). It's perfectly legal (here in sweden at least, make *sure* it's legal where you're at before tinkering).
It would obviously be for personal use only, and tons of work to do, but well... Quite doable.

True, but I would rather see an Official WB built with all the bells and whistles.

Precicely! Let's hope, then, the SkinsFactory reconsiders not doing them.
