Happy Mardi Gras, Y'all!

Today is Fat Tuesday, so I just thought I would wish y'all a happy Mardi Gras! I've got red beans and rice cookin' on the stove, I've had my King Cake for breakfast this morning, and I even flashed my husband a few hours ago and earned my beads! Let the good times roll!

Ed, Fat Albert, as in, The 'Cosby kids' cartoon?
Hey, isn't Mardi Gras a 'New Orleans' thing?

Actually, it's kind of a Southern thing -- New Orleans does it up the biggest in the U.S., I think, but it's celebrated all over the Gulf Coast in the United States, and here in Central Florida, I think Universal Studies keeps the thing going all the way through Spring, even though it's suppose to be over Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" - the whole Mardi Gras season is about excess, indulgence, opulence, and licentiousness, so that "giving things up for lent" is fairly easy. Now, we all know I'm not religious, but I moved to the South 10 years ago, and discovered the fun of the party, and it's become a tradition that I cerebrate every year.
It's also celebrated in Brazil, but there it is called "Carnival" and THAT is where the BIGGEST Mardi Gras festival takes place.

I wish we had it here, all we have is the 'Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras', no, I'm not being rude, we actually really do have it, they televise the whole thing each year, it's really.. GAY
[NOT that there's anything wrong with that! - Seinfeld]

Well...couldn't you just be "gay for a day?" I mean...couldn't you just fake it for a day? Certainly nobody would actually want you to PROVE anything, would they? (I've had too many gay friends not have gay/lesbian sympathies -- I'm straight but not narrow, as they say). Gay culture is kinda fun to watch/support. Drag queens are the greatest, really! They'll encourage you and build you up better than any regular friend I've ever had (makes up for all the baggage my mom saddled me with).

Just got back from Mardigras. Left New Orleans Friday. Missed the big parades, but had fun watching the ones we did, and visiting with family. The MRS is Cajun and has a huge family down there. 56 first cousins alone. Tho today I did cook a whole mess of Jambalaya.
Oddly most dont realize Mardigras is not all about the wild stuff you see on TV, actually most of it is kid oriented, folks tossing beaded necklaces from floats as they go by, as well as toys, cups, ring lights, etc. Only on "Bourbon street" at night will you find the type of behavior Mardigras has been stigmatized with. Tho I have been known to head over Bourbon Street and partake in the night time festivities.
This Mardigras.....I got bourbon faced on shit street.
Ahh good times...

Yes. It is where at night, the wild goings on take place, but during the day it is a market section of town with tons of lil gift shops. Got some really cool souviners there Friday before we left.
My trip to New Orleans is the reason for my absence the last week or so.

I'd LOVE to go there, I saw it once on a live cam, I was interested because the 'Vampire Lestat', from the books, lived there, or around there, so I took a look.
I bet you can buy really cool stuff there, like Voodoo dolls.
Somebody mail me a souvenier!!!!!

OMG HG, you HAVE to send me a Voodoo doll dear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, she wrote 'Interview With The Vampire' in the 70's, but they only made a movie out of it in the 90's, and another one a few years ago, 'Queen of the Damned', good series of books though.
