Centralized List of Ideas and Suggestions for The Forums

Just to Help Centralize Things

Wednesday, January 21, 2009 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Community

Many WC'ers have advanced ideas for The Forums and problems encountered using them. They're spread out all over the place. That's the reason I'm making this Post: To centralize things to make the job of others who want to make WC the best it can be easier.

Everyone is welcome. Have fun. I'll do my best to sift through it all and post it up here to try and save evryone's time (Zubaz's suggestion)

A. Make last post read work.. for everyone

B. 1. Return to top of page at bottom of each page.

    2. Clicking on Recent forum Activity take you to latest post not first page.

    3. Expanded smiley list.

4, Separate section for Political discussions, Humor (including shopping shots) and personals.

    5. General section would be for general Stardock and WC realated conversations.

    6. Recent posts list either expanded to 20 listings, or separated into help related and non-help related subjects.

    7. Better search function.

C. 1. Polls.. everyone could create polls.

  2. Introduction of negative karma.

  3. Increased Firefox compatibility.

  4. Lower/shorter render times.

  5. Bann on using adult words

  6. Animated Gif avatars less than 100 kb

  7. Integration between WC main site and forums.....(sign on)

D. actually having the built-in browser spell checkers function in these post boxes.

E. I think rather than trying to implement more ideas for the forums...like birthdays etc...as done previously....best to try and get what we already have working.....or back to working....again.

F. 1. Fix the  "insert link" function. It currently works backwards. It should work as follows: Click the insert link, put in the                  url, it puts in the appropriate code with the url doubled as the name, which is highlighted so you can name it whatever you          wish. (any problems with this suggestion please ask bebi bulma for a better/fuller explanation).

  2. actually having the built-in browser spell checkers function in these post boxes.

G, 1.subscription emails for watch list) and other features that are totally broken/nonfunctioning (guestbook comment deletion, the photo albums) that those should be fixed before anything else gets added.

  2. make the smilies style='vertical-align:middle' like they were before.

  3. fix the Quote mechanism: attribution should work even for limited portions of posts/replies.

H. Please make the comment book 'remove comment' function work again.

I. I would like to see a timer perhaps. You have 2 minutes to edit your post . .and then it's locked.

J. There are times when you need to edit something after 2-5 min.

K. 1. uploading images directly into the post as opposed to calling on an external site to relay the image back. this would be            especially helpful in the help sections of the forums .

    2. [do something with the wiki to make it effective, it seems pretty barren on information/help.]

L.  1. Faster refresh rate for the forum pages to prevent mistimed replies.

    2. Fixing the "double post" problem.

M. 1. No changes to karma. Should remain positive incentive.

    2. Mod edit objectionable picture content.

N. No animated avatars. Forums not a video store.

O. 1. Several ideas for time limit to "edit" function: Range from 2-10 minutes from time of post.

    2. the time limit should be fairly long until they get around to putting a spell checker in the editor.

    3. Edit would only add new comment in the same box and require printed 'reason for edit' above the newer post and                     notfication in the thread that a post was changed.

    4. Karma should not be anonymous. Karma has become pointless.

    5. Karma is ok, it's meant to be taken lightly, and there's no need to kill the fun

    6. Karma is nothing but a novelty. It's FUN trying to get that karma up. Add negative Karma and the fun is gone, and with that it'll be entirely useless.

    7. Karma: It's kind of relative and for me it has had a positive effect.

P. 1. Edit function should last a few minutes. Original post/reply should remain along with it.

    2. Freezing the post after a short time, if someone wants to correct or change a thought, let them post another.

    3. Re the editing of comments....I'm totally against it. Posts [and threads] being altered for whatever 'agenda' is not                     acceptable. Whatever is decided, the number one demand is accountability....the thread comment must be tagged with             'edited by....'  publicly .... and ideally if that's the case the edit text should be linked [hidden] but visible for review                   by the Admins. I've always thought the height of bad manners was/is to edit a thread topic, etc AFTER several/many                 people have taken the time/effort to respond/comment.

Q. 1. The forums shouldn't parse any html whatsoever from the post box.

    2. Unless you are a member of a specific user class, your html isn't parsed, period.

    3. User posted html just wrecks havoc on the forums and should be completely ignored from parsing. It should all be plain             text (with the exception of the bbcode buttons in the editor). There just doesn't seem to be any checking for open tags,             which causes all the problems.

    4. I think 2-3 mins for the post locking. negative Karma is a bad idea.

    5. Several of the classic smilies do not match when posted...would be nice to have them tidied up...the sad goes to                       angry and the Yum goes to the big smile.

    6. Cross posting errors if two windows are open.

R. {1. Inaccurate time/date stamping keeping comments at the top of notes on Personal sites}

S. Fix the need for double sign in @ WC Home page then again @ Forums.

T. Subscribers still see ads.

I'm not upset I was posting my thought's , and there is no decision in question, to be upset about.

When I first joined, you, Zubaz, pointed out to me, after I posted how I wish I could rate skins.. that all Subscribers can rate skins..  now we may possibly not be able to is all... no harm.. no foul.

[I'm actually VERY happy with the Mods latest decisions.]

as the opinion of just the Mods [no offense AT ALL to them] is only a handful of people, you know the saying.. majority rules. .. the opinion of many users is likely to be more accurate.

If you have a 99 5th graders and 1 PhD university professor, just because all the 5th graders agree on an answer doesn't make it correct. Simply saying that majority=accurate/correct isn't quite true.

Brad said it would likely be replaced with a like/dislike system kinda like the fav system on dA.

Let's ALL not make inclusive generalisations which infer failings amongst our fellow site members, intentional or otherwise.

Please.. stop singling me out, Bebi, and putting me down, I'm fed up with it... I haven't posted anything hurtful, that needs your childish retort.. this is the second topic you've done this in... see Jafo's quote above.

It's boring, and it's immature.

ALL members should be made to feel welcome when they post here, not belittled.

Zu and Doc, sorry about being off topic with the ratings.. but you were all off topic with Boy George.

Doesn't make the answer incorrect either, bebi. That's not a great metaphor.

Zu- I also agree it's not at all on topic but in this thread, why bring that up now?

People, lets stop this petty bickering in a thread that is meant to present "ideas and suggestions" about the forums.  If someone is going to take indirect shots at another poster, just leave the thread alone and let it go.

Agreed ID , now maybe we can post our thought's and ideas again

Edit: To Zu, hon, it is, when they start to PM you needlessly as well as troll you in topics, plural... as she has done...   but I've gone through the proper channels to deal with that.

I just want to have fun here, and try and be helpful, and keep on creating! that's what it's all about.

It's probably a good idea that we all assume that no attack is intended in a forum post.  Text does not convey tone well and what one person thinks is an attack may be humor or just dialog.  Just one more benefit of our Global village, right.

That's a shame Doc, as one of the benefits of Subscription, is being able to rate skins

I didn't realize that one of the criteria for rating skins was just to be a subcriber. Now that the lightbulb has lit on this I have to go along with the "like, don't like" crowd. Subscribers that do not skin are basing their rating on "like, don't like" not on technical merit/apptitude.

No, it's not a criteria, you can rate skins when you're an Apprentice [I believe] and up as well.. anyway, we were told to drop this, as it's forum suggestions.

Lets see, trying not to single anyone out, but a few people here should develope thicker skins.  If they can't, then they will always think they are being picked on.  That will leave a few choices.  1.  Quit posting, 2.  Continue to complain about being picked on or 3.  Don't say anything.  If someone says your an asshole/idiot stupid or whatever, thats being picked on and they will be dealt with.  Quoting someone is not being picked on or singled out.  Its trying to answer someone elses thought.  I've been quoted on this thread, some agree, some don't.  Thats life.  We just need to respect each others comments, even if we don't agree with them, and move on.  Just be friendly, act like your talking to the people face to face.  Life if way too short, trust me, I know.

I'll be honest, gmc2... The star thing (and it's location) has been screwy since forever and people have been asking for a fix for that.

Also, Why should freeloaders get a voice? I couldn't care less what they like or dislike.

They come to download for free while I and others pay their way? Nope. They get limited and then hit their limit and move on. That doesn't help WC, SD or us.

I believe the Galleries are just like an art gallery (viz. Master Skins, etc.) and since the consumer votes with $ there, he/she should be able to say what he or she thinks is worthy in every Gallery since that becomes the $ equivalent and a criterion for advancement in the Community.

The star method isn't great. Maybe a system with "Creativity/Originality: (enter 1-10) Technical Skill: (enter 1-10)" type box would be good. I don't even know if that's possible.

I do know that I do not wish all input to be in the hands of Moderation. Same reason as in government. I think we as the consumers deserve to be able to give input, and "Like it/Don't like it" is not it, and it's hurtful and NOT informative to the artist.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a separate suggestion:

Correct tabulation of PM's.

that's where the comment box comes in....

the star rating is not particularly accurate...and when all's said and done... you rate with your download......there have been things I've liked and downloaded at 2 stars....and things I've disliked at 4/5....basically....download what you like...and leave contructive comments/praise/critique.....

The star method isn't great. Maybe a system with "Creativity/Originality: (enter 1-10) Technical Skill: (enter 1-10)" type box would be good.

trouble is....your general user is not particularly equipped to rate technical skill......and creativity/originality is often in the eye of the beholder...

I agree with that.  That was a lesson I learned very quickly when I started chatting online and especially on irc.  Some of the things that have been said to me over the years has been way past being "picked on".  LOL  But, it's part of life- not everyone gets along.  Like I tell my 10 year old daughter- you need to learn to work with the people you don't get along with, then you can ignore them all the rest of the time.

The other thing that I have noticed is that people who get "picked on" usually keep digging up the mud to keep it going.  You can see that a lot on JoeUser   Sometimes people really like drama and won't admit it.  LOL

If I cared about the rating system I would have quit skinning a long time ago. But I do appreciate the comments of skinners that I feel are competent.

Also, Why should freeloaders get a voice?

Uh, I sort of resemble that remark. I have paid in the past but am not currently a subscriber. I would consider paying a nominal fee to support the site but.... (probably another thread for this one??)

trouble is....your general user is not particularly equipped to rate technical skill......and creativity/originality is often in the eye of the beholder...

Quite true, and even though I skin it doesn't make me an expert to critique "good" skins.

that's where the comment box comes in....

Ah, but make a negative comment and watch the trashing come about.

Hey Bub, watch picking on the geriatric crowd or you could get run over by a Hover-Round.  Sort of our version of a drive by.

Just got in from ploughing out the driveway and path. Never meant that personally, and actually as I read it, it sounds mean spirited to me. I'm sorry it came out brusquely...really. Having said that, I think subscribers should have privileges...after all, they bought the right to them.

Greg, it's out of our hands anyway..."a decision for higher pay grades to make".

'This blind stinks'.........is negative/rude..

giving your honest opinion ...and why....is valuable critiquing.....and should be respected by other commenters....hopefully there will be more of it......and the trashers will learn the difference...
