Masters....... have your say.

Friday, July 4, 2008 by Vampothika | Discussion: Community

Someone suggested the masters make a post about skinners, because some skinners  are only skinning correctly, 3/4 and such.  So i thought i would start one for them.

This IS NOT a BITCH thread, its a mature discussion of what masters would like to see from us apprentice skinners and what we can do to improve ourselves.

I think this will be VERY REWARDING as we pick up tips and such and hopefully improve our skinning and one day become masters ourselves.....!!

i now give the masters the stage and let them have their say............

The single most educational source for skinning...ARE THE SKINS THEMSELVES.Find a skin that works the way you like and open that sucker up and dig in.You will find solutions to problems you didn even know you had.

Bingo. That's the ticket.

The title of this thread is Masters...have your say...not Give us warm fuzzies.Despite the posters protestations to the contrary...the issue that prompted the posting was a negative one...griping was what was expected. It's not playing fair to ask us to tell you whats wrong and then say thats not nice because you dont like what you hearing. If you dont really want to know...dont ask.Perhaps you have background info we don't, IR, but the rest of us had to take this article at face value. Bitching & griping are synonymous where I come from, so I wasn't expecting either.

.......there is NO backstory, Brainiac obviously believes its a hidden agenda.......but it aint.....oh well.....*shrugs* and *moving on*

I think the intentions are good. It's just that a lot of folks, even when BEGGING for some kind of constructive criticism don't realize how thin their skin is until they actually get a response. Then you have those skinners that believe they ARE skinning correctly or skinning ALL they need to. To even suggest they are doing otherwise may be seen as bitching or griping. It's all a matter of how it is taken by each individual. If I were a master and got slammed for any advice I gave here because someone took it as a personal affront to their talent or lack of, I would hesitate to post again on the subject.

I think the thread had good intentions and can work for folks like me who will take whatever advise I can get. Someday, when I post my first skin, I know half of you will rip it apart and post your fix lists. lol. Honestly, it's one of the things I like about the site. Since I moved to South Carolina from Pennsylvania, I have missed hanging with the type of people that you can say what's on your mind to, or say 'Fuck You' and they still pick up the check and you leave still friends.

I guess it goes back to 'No good deed goes unpunished'.

Po -

Thing is, no one person was asking for constructive criticism. This was a request from Kitty/Panndora for Masters to share with all of us some "pearls of wisdom" or "tips & tricks" - that sort of thing. I took it as an opportunity for skilled skinners to help us identify what we might be missing or unaware of that would help us create better/more complete skins for the community. She was also pretty explicit about what the thread was NOT to be about.

However, nuff's enuff.

I am but a lowly citizen and novice skinner but you know I am trying to do my best to make skins that I think look good. How can I do this when WB6, or it could be SS6 or the interaction between these and XP won’t function as desired. Minimized window image is a good example. Transparency won’t work, it doesn’t matter if it is magic pink or a png/tga file, anything set for transparency comes out black. This image has to be a rectangle. I’m starting to put these issues on the wiki. I have had an open ticket since last month with no response and having had some input from other skinners, find that they are experiencing similar problems.

I strongly support this concept and only want it to get better and to work as it is touted to do.

thank you very much.

That is thé most important thing to do! (Karma points coming your way)

Skin for yourself, and "screw everyone else".
If you're skinning to please others, then you're skinning for the wrong reasons.

Wise words....

Whenever someone posts a thread asking for what people would like to see, you know they are not skinning for the right reasons.

Maybe we could get a Skin Cast Episode for "What is a Skinner?"... Get a few ole timers on there shooting the stuff on what they see as good and such for a Skinner new and even old.

It would make for a really good title and have some fancy action background music with a lot of good interviews for what all it is and how to get it together to be what it is or to be.

I believe it could really be one heck of a killer show with the right stuff.
Put it to vote as for what is in one of the next episodes with what skinners and such.

It could be a really good thing!!!
