Vista Ready - What does it really mean?

Saturday, March 29, 2008 by CptCrckpot | Discussion: Skinning

I have 2 PCs, one XP and one Vista.  I've been trying to find a skin that looks nearly the same on both.  I've downloaded every "Vista Ready" skin that there is.  What I've found is that most of them are almost anything but Vista ready.  The start menu seems to be a particular area that has problems.  User pics that don't fit in the frame the skin has for them, imitation search boxes and logon/logoff buttons that don't fit the dimensions of the real thing, tops of skins that cut off at the wrong point, and frequently used program panels that don't line up at the top of the start panel are just some of the errors I've found.  Is there a problem with my particular layout or screen resolution, or are skinners really being that sloppy when making skins for Vista?  Does "Vista Ready" just mean that the skin will load on Vista, or is it supposed to mean that the skin will look good on Vista?  If the former, then it seems to me to be a rather useless designation;  if the later, then whoever is checking these skins for Vista readiness needs to do a better job.

This mean the Skin as been made for Vista and XP or Vista only. It meant the author/skinner create the elements needed by Vista.

is it supposed to mean that the skin will look good on Vista?

This is a wrong question Skinning is a mater of tastes and Limitations in Vista Case especially.
Some things good on XP will looks really bad on Vista. we can't expect the author/skinner will do the "same" exact skin on Both cause for some skin it's necessary to change some elements/settings to fit Vista limitations.
When that said,You could also have a different point of view on how do this or this than an other people it's normal.

"Vista Ready"

"Vista Ready" means that the skinner has checked that box when uploading his skin. There is no guarantee that all the parts are there or that it will look correct on your system.

As Quentin said, it's pretty much left up to the skinner to do as he prefers.

I know that there are different elements in Vista skins vs XP skins. The problem is that quite a few skins that say "Vista Ready" don't actually work properly in Vista. It's not a matter of style, it's a matter of things being in the wrong places, things not lining up, etc. If "Vista Ready" just means that the skinner checked a box when they uploaded the skin, then I guess my complaint is that a lot of skinners are checking boxes they shouldn't be checking.

Vista ready to me means........the skin has been skinned on vista, for vista, tested on vista and hence is vista ready, I wouldnt tick the box otherwise if i didnt even have vista on my system....

....I kind of disgaree with that thought pictor....just about all vista skinners for wb now skin pretty much everything there is to skin, and there should be no reason why it wont look correct if it has been skinned properly........

I agree, but the problem is many authors are simply adding the badge when none of those things mentioned are included.
