How To Report Site Bugs

The better info you give us, the quicker we can fix things

Monday, February 18, 2008 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News

Since the forum upgrade late late last night, there have been a number of people encountering bugs or inconsistencies in how the site is working.  We are trying to get all of these problems resolved as quickly as possible, but we need help from the community to track everything down.

Now, when you find something, please don't go "images are broken!" or something equally vague.  Bugs like that do us no good.  They don't tell us what specifically is broken, where it is broken, and under what conditions we need to reproduce the problem.

With that in mind, any time you report a site bug, please use the following format.  This is especially important today with forum and articles issues:

  1. What page is the error on?  Please provide the specific URL.
  2. What is the error you're seeing?  Please be as specific and detailed as possible.  Include exact error messages.
  3. Can you consistently reproduce it?  Please list all steps.
  4. What browser are you running (and version!)
  5. If you can, please please please attach a screenshot to illustrate the issue.

Good, detailed information lets us get to fixing problems faster.  Vague bug reports result in us spending time trying to decypher what the problem is, which can be better spent fixing the bug.

1. What page is the error on? Please provide the specific URL. Article/Comments "Forums are Back Up" LINK 2. What is the error you're seeing? No error messages. 3. Can you consistently reproduce it? Please list all steps. Yes, consistently... a. Open WC Home page b. Click on Comments link under article (see #1) c. Page "0 of 2" opens, all replies are numbered "0" d. Click on right-arrow (Next page) at bottom of page e. Page "1 of 2" opens, all replies on this page are repeats from page "0" but are numbered correctly. f. Click on right-arrow (Next page) at bottom of page g. Page "2 of 2" opens, new replies, but first one is numbered "2" and all subsequent replies are even-numbered (2,4,6, etc) h. Last reply is still a "test" reply from unnamed poster, even though I have replied twice, and the comment counter is increasing. 4. What browser are you running (and version!) Vista HP32, both Internet Explorer 7 (v. 7.0.6000.16609) and Firefox (v. 2.0.0.12) 5. If you can, please please please attach a screenshot to illustrate the issue. Okay, here are some screenshots (cropped down) to show some of the issues noted above... Hope that helps...and I am still unable to see any of my replies at the end of that article.

All replies on this page have #0. https://www.wincustomize.com/articles.aspx?aid=300082 The same article appears on forums and have correct reply #. And the line breaks are broken on this page. No problem with that on the forums.

It looks like forums show the contents of their child forums (So Stardock Support shows all posts from the Object Desktop forum), but they do not show their childrens child forums.

Example:

This post shows in the Object Desktop forum but not the Stardock Support forum because it was posted in the Stardock Support \ Object Desktop \ WindowBlinds forum.

https://forums.wincustomize.com/?forumid=167&aid=176481

This means a large number of posts are going to get missed.

Re: my post here WWW Link

I've fixed how it looks now, but it took me a while.

I'd originally managed to embed the youtube video into original post so that it was both visible, playable and a clickable link to source page.

Formatting problems including, no respect for margins, line breaks etc. It just wasn't able to relate at all.

The embedded code was not visible in normal circumstances, I just happened to get a lucky glimpse for a second before it disappeared when I entered edit mode. The only way to remove it was to select all and delete, even though there was no evidence of it being present.
