SP3 install error Q327101
Help me! I need to install SP3

Hi. I am currently runny Windows xp pro SP2 and I want to upgrade to SP3 (Service Pack 3). But when I go into the installer it says:
The core system file (kernel) used to start this computer is not a Microsoft Windows file. The service pack will not be installed. For more Information, see Knowledge base article Q327101 at http://support.microsoft.com.
I have been to the site and i have done what it says to do. I have Google-ed it but it does not come up with any answers

you running any 3rd party boot or logon randomizers?

Yes, I have. I used tune up utilities. I uninstalled it but it still doesn't work. A while back I installed a vista customisation pack, but i also uninstalled that.

None of Stardocks software or programs would have done anything to change the core system file. Have you loaded any other customizing software that could have caused this problem?
Yes, I have. I used tune up utilities. I uninstalled it but it still doesn't work. A while back I installed a vista customisation pack, but i also uninstalled that.

I had a popular one which was called 'windows vista customization pack'. The link to it is here: VCP . However, after the installation, (which, mind, neverworked proprly- in the middle of the installation it came up with that annoying 'such-and-such must be closed. Sorry for any inconvenience.) , I realised that i had clicked accsess core files, but it never got to that. Then i downloaded another from download.com and it went through all the way BUT This time a notce came up saying that protected system files were being overwritten and I had to insert the CD so windows could replace them. When the Service Pack Didn't work, I tried reinstalling the OS, but it came up with the same Q327101 message.
Ive already been there and done that and nothing works.

When you say you downloaded another from download.com was that the same customization pack? Really doesn't make much of difference if you tried reinstalling the OS.
If you are getting the same error message as before I would say your reinstalling of the OS didn't go correctly. You could try reinstalling the OS again or try to do a repair or wipe the complete hard drive and start from scratch. I would try the repair option first, if that didn't work try a new reinstall of the OS again. If that didn't work I would seek out a computer repair shop that you trust and get professional help.

Where did you get SP3 at? This link addresses SP1 &2 not SP3.

Allright, i'm back from completely reinstalling windows into a different directory, but by doing this i made the installer work. What i need to know now is: what's the difference between SP2 and SP3?

All right. I´ve installed sp3 rc2 on xp pro build 2600 and first had erros Q327101. I´m using Tuneup 2007 aswell and had modified everything. I openned it and restored default logon screen, bootscreen and default desktop settings. Didn´t need to uninstall nothing. I ran sp3rc2 installation and have to boot twice. After that everythin was running well. I hope this will help someone to fix them probs on installing sp3 on xp.

Huh...I've had SP3 since the first RC was let loose. Never had any probs installing, running, etc....

There are a few minor tweaks, but for the most part it's a wrap up of all of the bug fixes released since SP2.

SP3 is still a 'Release Candidate' - which means it is a beta version.
First stupid thing - trying to install something for Vista on a XP machine.
Second stupid thing - allowing it to change core OS files.
Third stupid thing - installing a beta SP for the OS.
How not to be bitten by the same bug?
Stick with software for your own OS.
Wait for the full release version of any SP.

SP3 is final and available on Windows Update now.
BTW, the transformation pack IS for XP, to make it look like Vista.

Hasn't been a very good experience for HP users with AMD cpu's. I'm waiting a while as well.

I have installed WinXP SP3 and I had the same problem. The solution is NOT to uninstall TuneUp. This won't help. You have to restore visual style of Windows to its default state. Use TuneUp to do this. After you do this you will be able to install the service pack.
