Over time, people get all sorts of manic interests...that manifest themselves as 'collections'.
Snowman, for eg has 'every' skin ever made....for any proggy.....
My interests are diverse....so there's more than one thing I like to collect.
It gets a bit crowded when you have 16+ bicycles........I'm attempting to rationalize that.... so currently, including frames there are....er.... 21.
When I was five I got into Meccano ....so 48 years later I still have that No. 3 set ....plus the equivalent of beyond a '10'..... 7 or 8 boxes of the stuff.
Motor Racing Officiating....over 30 years..... I try to limit myself just to caps for the World Superbikes [they're particularly well embroidered....FIM badges, etc..... I end up with 4 or 5 others each year....so the F1 and Moto are passed on to other 'fans'.... but then there's service badges...pins....programs....posters....tabbards....and pieces of car/bike.....
When I was 10 it was Magnus the Robot Fighter [comic - Gold Key] .....I wish I'd kept them all back then.....they're worth money now....but I have 'most'.
When I was 5 - 6 I had all 72 [I think] Matchbox cars...as on the typical display case .... and I sure wish I'd kept those.... could just about retire now...
Anyway.....what monopolizes your collective juices?

When I was 5 - 6 I had all 72 [I think] Matchbox cars...as on the typical display case .... and I sure wish I'd kept those.... could just about retire now...

NFL Trading cards, not as much as I used to though. In the late 80's early 90's, companies noted the trading card buzz and wanted to cash in. Within 5 years the market was saturated.
Ah...the good ole' days...I had John Elway rookie, A Terry Bradshaw First year, and Steve Young from when he was in the USFL. Thousands upon thousands more....

HG....In '88 I worked the first Nascar race ever outside the US ....at 'The Thunderdome' here in Melbourne....still have the Video [now on DVD]...and the Proggy...and the cap [I think]...

You are exactly correct. Plus the price for a good pack of cards is about $20.
The last pack I bought was $600. It was called Playoff National Treasuures It came in a wooden box with..7 cards in it.

Yeah, that's something else I've collected recently...the white and yellow page phone books (every number)for Tasmania & Queensland here in Oz.

What I've ended up collecting (without trying) is art. The walls in my office and my house are covered with oil paintings, water colors, chalk, and pencil drawings as well as glass art. ALL of it created by friends or family. I do not have a single painting or other framed item that I do not know the creator personally.
Examples; I took a friend and his brother-in-law fishing while the in-law was visiting from Virginia. About 2 months later I get an email of a scan of hand sketch of a picture of myself holding a redfish I caught while we he was here. Included was a note of thanks saying to watch for a package in the mail. 3 or 4 days later I get an framed and matted 11x17 original copy in the mail. It's fantastic. One of my treasures.
My sister married a rock star (Hooverphonic) and moved to Belgium. Her father in law there is a retired draftsman who draws using small straight lines only. He did some architectural renderings in his style of drawing in ink and I have 2. The time involved for each is staggering and to me that, more than anything else, make them valuable.
I have another very good friend who is "classically trained" and paints in oils. He takes my photos and turns them into full sized paintings. I get a few (usually have to pay for the frames) and he sells a few. I also get several on loan to put on display at my office to help him sell his work. Most sell from $300-600 with a couple going for around $900.
My wife is very talented as well and has a knack for needle point, quilting, cross-stitch, drawing and watercolors taken from my pictures.
I could go on.........both grandmothers, a sister-in-law, Jackson Walker..........thing is, I never had much of an interest until I noticed one day what had happened. Now I won't put anything up that I don't have a personal connection to. I guess that makes me an art collector.

Me? I could do 3 or 4. (I'm a natural speed reader.
) But, I also like Budgies. I have an aviary in my living room...

Inside his colours jacket he had dozens upon dozens of teaspoons collected from various cafes he'd visited all over the UK....every one of them different: some; those very dainty souvenir type spoons.

Then I got marries and started collecting daughters. I have four now.
They don't take up as much space in the garage but fill my heart significantly more.
