WindowBlinds 6 Beta Feedback

Wednesday, August 1, 2007 by Neil Banfield | Discussion: Stardock Support General

Please post all feedback about the WindowBlinds 6 beta on this thread.

Note that the beta is for 32 bit XP and Vista systems only.  Please do not post about it not working on 64 bit XP/Vista.  Please continue to use WB 5.51 on those platforms.

This beta is for Object Desktop customers ONLY.  Standalone WindowBlinds 5 owners will not be able to activate this build.

Please note that you must have Stardock Central 2.46 Build 154 or later to install the WindowBlinds 6 betas. If you try and use older versions, it'll eventually timeout and give you an error about an invalid URL.

If you have problems with it running at all, please uninstall WB6, reboot and then try reinstalling WB6 again.

I have found an interesting problem with wb6. The diamond vista skin cause ie7 to crash when you access the tools button on the explorer bar. The xp version of the skin is fine. I have repoduced the problem on another computer I have. I uninstalled wb6 several times deleting all the skins etc, with the same results.

WB6 is working fine here too. I do have a wierd problem though after installing WB6. Let me see if i can explain ( english is not my native language ).
When i click a txt file ( or view a picture ), then i have to wait some seconds before i can click the txt file again ( or view a picture ). For some strange reason it hangs for some seconds.
This happens with the majority of the skins. Only a few dosen't bring up this problem.
I can't really see why this happens, so i was hoping some of you might know why this is and how to fix it.
Not a big problem but rather annoying.
Despite that, i love Windowblinds and i'm looking forward to the final release.

I'm using WB6 with vista ultimate. Up until a few weeks ago the firefox nightly builds worked fine with WB6. But something has changed because when running the latest ones, such as firefox-3.0a8pre, when I right click on the browser or press on the top menu items, file, edit, view, etc., all that appears is a large blank area, with little scroll buttons at the center top and bottom edges.

Excluding firefox-3 from WB6 clears up the problem and firefox runs fine. I know, it's a beta on a beta, and weird stuff should be expected. Other than that, WB6 is great.

Except one thing: If you don't backup your themes, the upgrade process delete VectorCell and others themes.

Same problem with latest build >

Acrylic
A Dreamy World
XPCobalt II

Hello,

I'm going to report and then kind of abandon a possible bug with the latest WB6 beta - release v5.91[b].038. I have another issue I am trying to resolve Startup questions - copying files and splash screen . Looking up this WB6 one right now will simply distract me. (Yes, only my computer can multi-task!)

I'm a current ODNT subscriber, with all products up to date. I'm running WB6, OB and OD+ with the Liquidox premium skin suite. The suite is pretty much installed across the board (font, icons, etc). I'm running WinXP (Windows Update is current) on an AMD 64 x2, with two nVidia 7900 GT in SLI. I believe my video drivers are up to date.

Anyway, the problem is this...

I've had some minor annoyances with the file copying and splash screen. In trying to resolve that issue I thought it might be related to the WB6 beta. So I used SDC to uninstall WB6 (latest version), rebooted, installed WB5 (latest version) from archive. Since this did not resolve my issue, I removed 5, rebooted and went back to 6.

At this point, as per normal, WB6 opened the configuration window to allow me to set up the "newly installed" program. I retained my previous Liquidox state, but since I had played with the new config screens a bit, I made sure they basically were in their previous (default) state and clicked Apply my Changes button (Configure>Look & Feel>Visual Styles). The desktop blurred out and when it came back I lost the standard window elements of the Config screen.

Everything else appeared fine. But on the Configure screen itself I had no titlebar, close box, border, etc. The scroll bar at the bottom (for the skin previews) was still present and I believe it still worked. These elements were not invisible. I could not drag or close the window by approximating their position. Nothing happened. My mouse events were (I assume) falling through to the desktop.

Clicking on the Apply my Changes button for a 2nd time, these elements re-appeared and operated normally.

Just updated to 5.91[b].038, the new config looks great but I have white text on a background where gradient goes to white, on settings pages, sys info and about, most of the text is unreadable.

Were you running wbconfig with the black UI option previously?

Didn't work.....
I was using Ares, removed the files mentioned from Acrylic and then applied the Skin, checked and there was no change, still basic blue. I rebooted just to be sure but My Documents came up without skinned shellstyles on the first try.

Lantec: could you please zip this skins that are you having problems with and e-mail 'em to danillooc(at)stardock(dot)com?

Sorry about not responding earlier but I wanted a chance to test all my skins and got busy at the office before I could. I found that all my skins show this problem. I assume since I'm the only one seeing it it's some other program I'm running on both my systems.

I use several explorer plug-ins and I'm thinking one of them is probably the culprit. Plug-ins: Styler Toolbar, QTTab Bar, Folder Size, Folder Box, Wildcard Select. A while back I was also using Windowpaper but I was seeing some strange results such as filenames not displayed in thumbnail view so I uninstalled it. I still have a couple customized folders showing the effects of it though.

I've gone to using "Classic Folders" since I rarely used any of the "Common Tasks"

I had reported (along with several others) a problem in WB 5.5 not displaying certain dialogs and menus in specific applications. One of them was the Outlook 2007 Rules and Alerts dialog. It showed nothing in the dialog. This problem was reproduced in your support lab and fixed with the last update to WB 5.5.

It is back as a problem in the WB6 beta release.

Not sure why this is still being missed, but the latest 5.91 beta just released still has this problem. It was a problem in 5.5 and fixed in the last release of 5.51, so hopefully someone will see this and fix it in WB6.

Here is the link to the WB5 thread about it https://forums.wincustomize.com/?forumid=167&aid=153447 You will see that Neil Banfield posted it was reproduced and fixed.

Is there a way to copy all the data from system information to the clipboard with a button in the config?  Make it easier for folks to post it here at WC?

Hey just wanted to add, that the latest build (5.91.038 for me) is looking gooooood! The molten theme seems to have the few things fixed from before. Now I'll just have to try and see if it still hangs up when I try and change my desktop picture. Now that there IS a picture with the Molten WB, there really isn't a need to.

I just wanted to give some compliments on a job well done before I start messing around with it and forget.

Again, it looks like WB6 is coming along nicely, and I must say that my new WB is going to be Molten for awhile, it looks really sharp (except the mouseover on the All Programs under XP, but that's a minor thing).

Yep; rolled back to last beta, turn off black UI, updated to current again, now have black text. Thanks Neil.

Downloaded the new version and I am loving it.

I really like the new WB Config interface.

If you install on a system that doesn't have WB already installed - there is no reboot required - nice.

Great job all.
