A new skinner on the block...

Sunday, July 15, 2007 by MovieMan999 | Discussion: Skinning

Hello. I'm a new member of WinCustomize but not new to their site! My brother introduced me to WinCustomize and I liked it a lot! I eventually wanted to join the community and become part of everything. I did a couple of days ago and have already learned a great deal about skinning! I've released two logon skins, one being Harry Potter OOTP logon in both Wide and Fullscreen. The second one is a generic Star Wars logon which I just uploaded today so it's not on quite yet. These are my first two.

Anyways...enough with the introduction. The main reason I'm posting is to know what I need to improve on to make my logons better for you. My Harry Potter logon only rated a 2-star and I'm not execting much better with my Star Wars one. If you could check them out and tell me what I need to do to improve it'd be much appreciated! Thank you for your time.

Don't worry about the rating. Sometimes I think it's random! Take for instance, I've made the same logon (one for widescreen one not) they are identical in every way, but got to different ratings! Your two stars may have to do with the subject of your skins - not necessarily the quality!
Drop by my page if ya like and check out my stuff!

Very nice work for a first time!

And as far as the ratings.....don't even look at them. I have skins rated at 3 stars that are my most downloaded, and some at 5 stars that don't have nearly as many downloads.

The main thing is you are happy with what you upload and feel it's the best you can do. As you get more experience, they will get better, people will know your work, and you'll get more downloads as people know you.

I was gonna say you should get in contact with the logon KING, mr boss0190. He'll help you out I'm sure with any questions you may have. Just remember, have fun with it and try not to get too frustrated if something won't work for you. Come here to the forums and ask questions...somebody will answer your plea.

first of all, welcome to the community. secondly, if you need to know some good tricks for logon studio let me tell u this, "you will need to learn lots of script codes", why? couse what i've seen in others work are just skins maded with logon studio.., this will limite your options...

...a good example is BOSS019, he might be one of the best logon skinners i've seen in a loooooonge time since i get into wincustomize.com(and we shouldn't forget deviantart.com). he dont use logon studio to creat his skins(well, to apply them yes), he creat his skins with a different software:
"Notepad"(yeap.., and i'm not kidding), i cant explain you the way he do them or where he learn how to creat them.., but maybe this could help you find out how he make his work:

"My very own logon"

take a look into the .ini file., compare it with other logon skin and you will se what i was talking about....

listen.., i'm not even good with logons but at least i try my best with them, some of them were good., others...., well...

just keep trying!!!

The fact that the wall used is from the official WB movie site and is an official wall that they offer and has the trademark/rights reserved stuff blacked out across the bottom doesn't help. WWW Link

After the posts here about all the other sites posting 'our' stuff, I'm surprised this got through.

First off thank you everyone for the welcome! I wasn't expecting so many posts within merely a day!
Secondly thank you for your advice! At least I now know the stars don't matter! I've seen Boss's work and he's extraordinarily good so I guess I'll have to talk to him!
Lastly, I thought about that Smedley and just figured if WC.com had a rule or issue with that sort of thing they would block it out. I just thought it wouldn't look right with that all of that on the bottom. From now on I'll keep it on.

They do have rules about it. WWW Link

However, as often as it has come up, so it has that the mods can't catch everything. There is also a 'fair use' policy. However, this wall comes from the official site for the movie and is an official wall they offer for download. With the 'trademark..rights reserved" info on the bottom of the wall, I am not sure that this wall falls under fair use or if keeping the info 'on' at the bottom would help.

Recently there have been some threads posted about author's here having there stuff posted on other sites without permission. Many artists here would be a little ticked-off if there wall was modified for something (other than a screenshot) without asking permission.

At the very least, when modifying someone else's work for something you should give credit where it is due. Ideally, getting permission from that other author to use/modify the work and enclosing it in the zip file would be preferable.
example of giving credit/acknowledgment.... WWW Link

It's a touchy, debated, and much discussed issue around the site. If you are ever in doubt (which may be an indication that you actually should get permission from the author), I would check with a mod before you submit it. It will save you a lot of frustration in the long run.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to read the rules of the site before you submitted anything rather than submit and wait to see if it was an issue ?

After all...when you upload anything the end screen actually mentions about giving proper credit if the work is not your own. So if you missed the 'rules' before your first upload, you surely could of checked them out before the 2nd upload.
