GroupBox Background Skinning

Can it be done?

Friday, June 8, 2007 by Daiwa | Discussion: Skinning

I can't seem to get solid image GroupBox background images to display properly in XP. They display correctly in SKS but are filled with the button face color in apps when applied. I can use a transparent image with just a border only (transparent center) to get the border I want, but when I fill it with an image, the image only displays in the top 6-7 pixels of the box with the rest solid button face color.

Is this a "limitation" or am I missing something?

TIA

In short, it can't be done in any consistant or reliable way.

Usually, only the outer few pixels of the groupbox image are painted, and the middle is filled in by Windows (using the button face color). Occasionally, Windows won't fill up the whole center, and only fill behind the parts that have text or other objects. When that happens, the groupbox tends to look like a sloppy patchwork. The best approach is to simply skin the borders of the groupbox. You do get a few more pixels to work with on the top edge where the groupbox label goes, so if you want to get fancy, that's the place to do it.

Yeah this is one area is not skinnable by any skinning program, like mike said, u can get greative with borders and the header image also, and that's..about it.

This is one of Brainiac's pet peeves also.

Interestingly, it works & looks great in Display Properties but almost nowhere else.

C'est la vie.

Thanks, guys.

Tab page skinning seems to work fine, but that image is not used for the groupbox. Would be extra nice if WB6 were to fix this and restore dialog backgrounds.

We can always hope.
