Posting Someone ELSE'S work
A New Category?
Monday, April 2, 2007 by PoSmedley | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
If the work being posted is originally created by a non-member and is posted by a WC member, I think it needs to be separated from the original work of WC contributor's.
I realize this will 'piss off' some people...that's not my intent. I also realize that this would involve defining 'other people's original work' and 'altered and/or improved on' and/or 'adapted for a specific proggie' and/or of course ports. All should include permissions and that they are included should be posted in the description.
It just doesn't seem right that someone gets ratings, points, etc., for work that someone else did..whom is not even a member of the site. I think if it is going to be posted here, it should have it's own category to distinguish it from everything else...no ratings or points..and not be allowed to consume front page space that can and should go to original works of member's. (Not that I have specifically seen anything 'not-original' on the front page)
IMHO

If they get permission and give credit and we all get more art (or whatever
) it's all good.Reply #5 Monday, April 2, 2007 10:55 AM

That's the way it SHOULD be, but in reality it is NOT the way it is.
They do matter to (what I suspect is the majority of) skinners/artists here and as long as those measuring devices are in place, people are going to be upset about things that disrupt the honest use of them.

If there were a finite number of points available and if I could trade in point for valuable prizes . . this would be a very different conversation.
{ring, ring}
"Hello Stardock."
"I'd like to trade 5000 FrogPoints in for an upgrade to CursorXP"
"Thanks!"

If it exists... how many points do you get for a high

I moderate for another graphic website and we do occasionally hit on this problem. Submissions with a????, as the author are usually thrown out but it can be just such a shame to see somebody that has shown talent in the past submitting something that is a sure ‘winner’ but the work in question is not in their style.
Perhaps a separate category for this type of upload would make it more official?

It all becomes very muddy when the prospect of ports, etc is considered as well.
I think people can take 'heart' that posting works 100% belonging to another [with permission] will do next to nothing towards promotions within the user-levels here, in comparison with original works and/or ports....

Silly ZubaZ... clearly they are Starbucks...

That is why I mentioned the defining of altered, adapted, etc. (You and I talked about this before..I got nutz!, I know) Ports of wb's by an author other than the original creator should fall into this category.
I understand the use of walls for boots and log-ons, etc. What I am talking about is taking something that someone else made and could submit here and submitting yourself.
Example..I have a wall on my DA site and someone asks me for permission to post the same wall here, as a wall. You can substitute the wall example for icon, wb, dxobject, etc.
I understand that they may have the author's permission, but my feeling is, let the original author upload it, otherwise, delegate it to it's own gallery so the artists who are submitting original work aren't competing with it for views, ratings, points, etc.
I'm only suggesting this and maybe I am not making myself clear or it's just to complicated an idea, I don't know. Again, I'm not trying to piss anyone off or anything. I understand all may not agree. Either way, let me know if you get what I mean. lol.

There's competition? For what?
A similar post popped up here last week due to an artist publishing someone elses work (with permission). My interpettation of the end result was that WC is designed to showcase the art, not the artist. Why make the system harder for the average end user who just wants to apply a cool wall or icon, or whatever? As long as permission is granted and original artist cited the submitter has performed a service and the casual user can go about customizing.
I would rather the original artist submit here under their own name and get more direct credit but I'd hate to make it a hassle if they choose to give "distribution rights" instead.
The original artist can always say no, right?

Thanks, Boss. I understand the point made and it's a good one. I do realize the stuff is going to be posted. Maybe it's just me, that I would like to see it separated from original work by the original artist in the gallery's.
All in all, it's no big deal. Just a thought I threw out here.

As a Wizop and employee, wouldn't the points and ratings be something you support?

But, it might also let you see what is popular, and you could work on things that are more popular if you want that.
I know its hard to look at the top 10 of a gallery and know that 2-3 of those top 10 are people who dont know how to skin their way out of a box, and your #11 or #100 who knows, it would bug me.. if i got bugged over that stuff, like fame, points, frogpoints, or starbucks..
I do agree with Jafo that the Admin's do know who is really making their OWN work, and who is porting things, and if all you want to be is a "citizen" then go for it. Dont look to make anything more then that.
I personally would rather have 100 downloads by people who know the work that went into the project, then 10,000 from people who will use it for 1 min then trash it when the next thing comes out. I know people that are using my work for months if not years. THAT is the real goal, making something that has LASTING VALUE, not fleeting fancy.
Just my 0.02
