Bootskin

im so lost

ok so I've followed the tutorial. did everything it said to do. resize, change to 16 bit, make folder with other boot skins. but I just cant seem to get the darn thing to work. when i try to open it, it says "error could not load bootskin. possible cause is read only boot. or something like that. can anyone please help me with this. AIM is cyberspacemonk3y. im trying to make this for my dads company

Upload the .bootskin to file hosting site, and post the link here so someone can check it out...fastest way I can think of.

change to 16 bit,


Bootskin images, screen and progress bar, must be 16 color 4 bit bitmap.

i meant 16 color 4 bit. my bad. and do you want me to upload all of what i did? cuz the tutorial only told me to make a progress bar, a 16 color 4 bit 680x460 background. and a file and save to .ini

Is this a you bad again, screen image must be 640x480. Progress bar size is 22x9.

If image sizes are correct, bit depth correct and the image names are correct in the .ini for your images, it should work fine.

In the .ini you have Screen=.Heritage.bmp, is the first . in the image name.

gah, no it did that to the prog bar too. though i got rid of it. let me try it again and i'll let you know how it works.

As long as all is correct and the folder with the images and .ini is in C:\Program Files\Stardock\WinCustomize\BootSkin\skins, it should show up in skin list when you open bootskin. If it does not you still have an error.
The errors that will not allow skin to show in list are, for screen image, wrong image size, wrong bit depth or incorrect name in .ini.

im gunna post a link with all the files, there are only 3, the background, the prog. bar, and the .ini file. all are in a folder on my computer. the whole process has been frustrating. so yea mind helping me get this darn thing straight?

Ok a couple things, the first .ini you linked to you had .ini twice, after correcting that and the extra . on the screen name it showed up in bootskin skin list. Have not rebooted to test but know it will not look correct when used, the progress bar has a different color palette than the screen image. They must have the same palette to look correct at boot.

First, the .ini file must be labeled as "bootskin.ini.

I didn't see Green in the screen image, though you used it in the progress...make sure both images use the same color table.


Also see comment #1...this could have been solved if I or someone else could actually see the bootskin you are attemtpting to load.

ok so how do i upload the bootskin? i changed the prog bar to red, change the .ini to bootskin.ini. i just dont know how to save it as a bootskin. all any of the tutorials say is to create two bmp files and an ini so umm how do save it as a bootskin?

Good catch Kilo, I did not notice that XMikeyX had changed it on the second .ini he linked.

so how do i change the color palettes?


XMikeyX, what graphics software are you using, there are a few ways to ensure you have the same color palette.

umm how do save it as a bootskin?


Open bootskin, select it in list, File, Export selected skin to file.

i changed the prog bar to red


Must have same 16 color palette as screen image, can't just make it a color that is in screen image.

I use MS Paint to make progress bar, open screen image in paint, draw progress bar by picking colors from image. Rect. select the 22x9 progress bar, File, Copy to, copy to folder with screen image and .ini. When close Paint don't save changes as you don't want bar painted on image.

i would upload it but its not showing up in the list. it did for a second but then when i minimized it and restored it i lost it

When I mean upload, I mean to zip the folder containing your images and .ini, then uploading that file to a free file hosting site...goole it there are many to choose from (it's like imageshack or photobucket). This way we can download the actual files you are working with.

However, it seems like you are having several problems, as most would on their first try, upload the original image you want the boot to have and someone might create a bootskin for you. Imageshack is a free image hosting site.
