Why do YOU do it.....?

Skin, that is.

Monday, November 13, 2006 by Jafo | Discussion: Community

The other day I was leafing through old 'bytes' in a dusty corner of a forgotten harddrive, and came across some ancient skins I did for a forgotten proggy or two...

Got me thinking....

What got me into this?...that's easy...was shells - messing with the GUI the 'brutal' way....but that's not what has me here still....around 10 years later.

So that reminded me of a 'feeling' I had at that old skinz.org site..... when I realised that skinning was nothing more than a new artform, like painting, or sculpting, except for one small detail.....People doing 'it' in the mid/late '90s were at the DAWN of the emergence of this new 'artform', and THAT was something no painter or sculptor could lay claim to....[at least none still living].

It meant that even as an 'observer' what was being done was genuinely fresh, new and exciting....and if you also happened to 'dabble in it' yourself then the fun was even more acute.

So....a decade later...the world has changed, skinning is far better-known now than it was then, and a lot of 'new' faces have been attracted to it all.  [skinz.org membership probably just made it into 4 figures...Wincustomize is in 7]

Question is.....WHY...?

Casual time-killer or outlet for expression?

The 'sad' part is knowing the people who have moved on, departed the scene...over the years.  People you think of...often....of whom many now are oblivious.  The 'happy' part is those who come after...to swell the ranks, even though skinning is now more complex [harder]...and maybe quite less divergent [fewer skinnable apps].

[I digress]

So....

Why are you here?

Nope...he just has a very large dicshunary and theasaurus, and peeple wonting to spell proper juss foller him around fer tha 'English' tips. Besides, he has an extended reach so he can clobber them folk who don't spell proper wiv that huge dictionary of his, so it's much, much safer right behind him ....

This, it seems, gives the (false) impression Jafo has groupies

Don't worry about it, Skinhit.....when Jafo's in one of his 'correct moods', you could say: "Holy crap!", and he'd correct it with: "Divine faeces!"

Well I used to skin because it gave me something to do. I was never good at. Never did make my own skins.

I don't skin now because I relized how evil a company MS really is. Therefore for awhile I quit using MS products. However Linux dosen't play my games so I put XP back on the little Dell with no plans to upgrade.

I am looking forward to the release of Vista so I can say "I told you so" on all the new threads about how Vista is screwing people's PCs up. Should be fun.

Heck I might get back into skinning. I should make some new things.

That is a good one Starkers! And by the way, I had to look up your spelling of it. It is correct, but is also spelled feces. hehe

Of course it's correct....I have an embedded memory of a teacher whacking me with a ruler for spelling it incorrectly (sh!t wasn't acceptable), so it's one of a few words I don't need to look up in the dictionary.

I dunno, what are we gonna do with you, Kona.....perhaps an extra propellor on that tinfoil hat, some ear plugs and ultra dark sunglasses 'll do the trick. Then maybe you'll hear no evil, see no evil and the extra prop'll confuse any evil trying to get into your head. Hopefully you'll then have pure thoughts...not continually looking for and thinking the worst of MS They did, after all, make a fantastic version of spider solitaire that takes some beating....I'll beat its 95% win record yet.

Actually, I've been running Vista since the first beta, and HONESTLY, it hasn't screwed up my PC.....and given the improvements with each updated edition, me thinks that if ya don't take up skinning again, you're gonna be twiddling your thumbs considerably more than writing in forums: "I told you so!"

Seriously tho, take up skinning again, I'd be interested to see your work and it'd help keep the 'just in' list ticking over, being there's been a few recent retirements.

Oh, and by the way, Cindy, faeces is the English spelling and derived from Latin. Feces is the U.S. spelling....apparently the A was dropped because there was some confusion with faces. Ah!!! So that's where the expression 'sh!t faced' came from.

Try reading Canterbury Tales in the original, then imagine being suddenly transported there and having to get food, lodging, and avoiding the faux pas with current customs. English?! Took English History two years in a row in high school, seven yrs. Latin, it all still sounds too weird...er..for words. "Wan wie the shilles ae th shoares soartes...lude synge cukoo..."
"Illegitimici non corborundum!" "faeces"? Faecuumm Sanctorum! Want fries w' dat, homes?

Rough translation (I think)....A bird who sh!ts and eats in its own nest is not only unwise but a dirty, unsanitary little bastard.

BTW, Seldomseen...great move, confusing the buggery out of Jafo like that! Now he won't know which dictionary to pick up first...Ye Olde English Dictionary, the Latin Dictionary, the Welsh, Irish or Scots Gaelic Dictionaries or the Encyclopaedia Brittanica's Reference to Modern Slang.
