More bad news.... Peter Brock has died.

Probably Australia's greatest Touring Car driver [winning Bathurst 9 times], Peter Brock has been killed today [Friday 8th of September] in a crash on Day One of a Rally in Western Australia.
As a Race Official for almost 30 years I met him many times. He was a great driver...and a great person.
He will be missed.

He was called 'Peter Perfect' because of his racecraft. I remember watching gob-smacked as he made it round 'my' corner at Calder [Repco - Turn 1] in an A9X Torana......on 2 wheels. For anyone who knows that track....I mean the entire corner on 2 wheels.
I remember thinking "you can't DO that....it doesn't work".
I also remember his cheeky grin and a wink when he autographed my Overalls with.... "P Brock 05 Ford" [in a Ford 'oval' shape]. I said "WTF?"....he said "you'll see"....and he went on to drive that Turbo Sierra thing at Bathurst...

There's a couple of reasons for that, I guess.....No 1, Oz politics is still as corrupt as ever and he failed miserably: No 2, nobody in their right mind mourns the departure/demise of a pollie.
However, another great Australian passed earlier this week: Colin Thiele, the author of Storm Boy (which eventually became a movie), Sun on the Stubble and Blue Fin. Thiele, also a school teacher, was a strong advocate for tolerance, cultural diversity and especially the higher education of our young people. Thiele devoted much of his time to visiting schools throughout Australia to encourage our youth to embrace literature and develop cultural interests.
Colin Thiele died shortly after being admitted to a Brisbane hospital on September 4 with severe breathing difficulties.
RIP Colin Thiele, you touched so many with your enormous heart, talents, great works and you'll be sadly missed.

Peter Brock's State Funeral....attended by 11,000 + to farewell a true legend of Australian motor sports, a man bigger than life itself, a great ambassador for the nation as a whole and a true champion of our indigenous people.
Fare thee well, Peter, your memory will always live on in our hearts.
