Microsoft released Vista RC1 (build 5600) to users who participated in the Customer Preview Program today. If you participated in the Beta 2 release, you should have received an e-mail with information on the RC1 release. You will need to use the key given to you in Vista Beta 2 for this new release
If you were not part of the Customer Preview Program before don't worry. Microsoft will be taking new participants soon, so check the CPP website for information on signing up.

Hm interesting.. If anyone else has a problem that they aren't signed up for CPP... Just use phone activation.. The customer service rep. was more than cooperative in giving me the 48-digit code to activate. 
Pretty cool. Guess they figure the copies will explode about June anyways so why argue.
(Sorry to take us off topic.. Just figured this was useful information for people like me that didn't have time to "wait" for CPP apps to be accepted and watch my puter burst into flames.. lol"

Well I tried Burning RC1 on my wife's machine using Nero 6.6. but still no go. Although I can select the 1x or 2x speeds, when the burn starts it's always at 4x and the result is a non-usable disc....if I have winimage08 installed I get a complete ISO file that does not autorun and individual files within cannot be accessed...if I uninstall winimage08, the resulting file is a invalid Win32 application and totally useless.
I tried with Ashampoo Burning Suite 6 on my own machine, but still cannot get the burn speed below 4x and the resulting disc was as above...effin' useless. I then tried burning with Ashampoo on my wife's machine, given her burner isn't one of these new fangled optical drives, but still the burning speed will not come below 4x, so I gave up trying, having wasted around 15 - 20 discs on it so far.
I'm now totally at a loss as to how I'll ever get this burn done...nothing has been successful so far and I'm fresh out of ideas, so if anyone can offer any ideas, possible solutions, etc, please respond cos I'm just about at my wits end.

I still think there's a problem with the .iso. SuperISO burned it just fine, and it has let me know before if there were problems with other isos. Vista install autostarts and install great...I've done it about 7 or 8 times after Vista screwed itself up somehow and I had to reinstall. 
It may be due to trying to install drivers not compatible and messing up the Vista registry. Either way, after a couple of days playing with it, it got boring. There are some cool things, nice effects, but I miss all my Stardock stuff...

Yeah, I'm thinking there's an issue with the ISO burning/conversion process somewhere, and that's why I cannot get an autorun disk or one I can where access the files with Explorer. Thing is, I looked into SuperISO but it doesn't handle files over 400mb if it isn't registered, and I don't have the ready cash to do that right now.
I've tried a couple of other burning proggies since my last post and still get the same result....an unusable disk. It's so frustrating cos I got Vista beta 2 to burn and install just fine, and I really wanna update it to see what all the fuss is about, but can't due to issues I'm unable to get past.
A thought did occur to me, if it's okay, that if somebody who's successfully burned RC 1 would be so kind as to burn a copy and pop it in the post for me. I did enquire with MS about getting the DVD kit, but was informed it would take several weeks before I actually received it, so I'd be eternally grateful if someone would be so kind as to do that favour for me...being that I'm champing at the bit to play with it.

Just had another go with it using the latest ImgBurn.....failred yet agin. 
I set it to read/write ISO's, even did a test run to ensure a successful burn, then burnt the disc when that came back okay. The burn was set at 2x but still went to 4x after the lead in. Well it's about time! One of these days I'll install this little baby and give it a test drive. I just hope it doesn't screw up my entire Battlefield 2 setup (using a mounted mini-image just so I don't have to leave the disc in drive all the time).

DUURRRRR!!! I feel like a right raving pillock!!! Was rumaging through my puter stuff and came across a couple of DVD RW's....had 'em all the time, it seems.
If only I had come across 'em a few days ago, I woulda saved myself the creation of a 20+ plus frisbee collection....some of which are now embedded in the walls. Not to worry though, I'll just tell the landlord some nut lost it with the multi-stacker CD player in his car, and they flew in here as he was driving past.
Figuring they were useless and I had to get some use/fun out of 'em. I even basted some with the juices of best topside steak in an attempt Brodie to fetch, but no go! He just lay there licking his lips and showing the young lass next door such sad puppy dog eyes that she eventually gave in and fetched 'em for him. I dunno, he only ever eats and sleeps, never alerts us to strangers and never chases away the postie when he's delivering bills....he's about as effective as a one legged man in an arse kicking competition.
Anyway, never being one to quit 100%, I put in a RW disc, adjusted the settings appropriately to burn an ISO at 2x using that format, but alas, the burn speed began at 4.2x Using ImgBurn, Ashampoo, Nero and Alcohol 120. Also tried burning to both DVD+ and DVD- RW formats to no avail. Oh well, At least I tried!
Now you'll have to excuse me...While I put meself over the wife's knee to get a good spankin' for blowing a $32 pack of DVD's.

Are you still trying it with the first iso you downloaded or did you download it again and try? If you are still using the first one I still believe it's bad no matter how it checks out. It's not a big deal to burn an .iso and any of the programs you used should have been fine. And also you tried on your wife's computer, so it's not hardware related. As far as the speed...I burned mine at 16x with no problems. If you are still using the first one....Redownload It!!

No, I tried with the first ISO I downloaded to my machine, then with the ISO my wife downloaded to hers, and then again with a fresh d/l on mine....and then again from the link in the email I eventually received from MS yesterday. That's four ISO's producing the same result.
When trying to open the autorun via Explorer, the most common result is a Windows warning stating: "This is not a Valid Win32 Application.", meaning I cannot install RC1. However, when winimage08 isn't installed, I get a 'Windows does not recognize this file type' and prompts me to search for a relevant program or a solution on line. Reinstalling winimage08, however, does not resolve the issue and the file cannot be opened.
I'm wondering if it may be a cache/registry issue that originated with the initial attempt using Nero, but given subsequent attempts were tried using other burning programs, I don't know if there's a possible connection between them, unless there's something unknown hiding somewhere in my system. Thing is, I've used Ccleaner and registry cleaners, temp & duplicate file removers, even did a system restore to before the initial attempt, you name it, I still can't burn RC1.
I think for now, my best hope for installing RC1 is Island Dog's most generous offer to mail me a copy. However, I'm not one to take defeat lying down, so I'm gonna be looking further into it in the hope of tracking down the source of my problem, being there's the likelyhood I'll want to burn other ISO's in the future....maybe even a copy of RC2 if MS deems one necessary before going gold.
Knowing my luck, however, I'll just get it figured out and there'll be a RC1 disc in my mailbox. Just ta give you an idea of how bad my luck has been lately, if it was raining gorgeous Hollywood starlets, I'd get washed down the gutter with a transexual cast of Les Girls.

As the heading so boldly announces, I now have Vista RC1 installed on my machine, tho it came at a cost.....close to a spindle of 30 DVD's and a large portion of my sanity. if I had any to begin with. And with all the settings changes I made during the many failed attempts, my clicking finger thinks it has rigor mortis
Anyway, here's the run down! It wasn't any of the downloaded ISO images or any of the burning programs used. It came down to two main issues: the first being the spindle of discs were apparently not compatible with burning ISO images...being that they would not successfully burn in either my wife's or my machine; and the second being both Lite-On DVDRW SHM165P6S drives seem to have some compatability issue with my system/OS...possibly driver related?
When I discovered the last remaining disc from a pack of Laser DVD's, I put it in my wifes machine and successfully burnt the RC1 ISO using Ashampoo's Burning Suite 6....the Vista install screen immediately appeared upon its re-insertion, and that's when I realised the batch I had previously been using were not the right discs for the job.
However, the issue was still not entirely resolved! When I inserted the successfully burnt disc into my own machine, it would not autorun and clicking on 'setup' resulted in yet another 'invalid Win32 Application' warning....meaning that I still could not install Vista RC1 via the autorun while XP was operating, despite being able to do so on my wife's system.
Thing is, I don't accept defeat easily and took a wild hunch on re-inserting the disc after resetting my BIOS to boot from disc...which worked, thankfully. The Vista RC1 screen appeared immediately after 'pressing any key to boot from disc' and thus was installed to the desired drive.
Obviously, then, there's an ISO burning/reading issue with Windows XP and the Lite-On DVDRW SHM165P6S somewhere. I've been able to write/burn in other formats, audio and video discs on both CD and DVD, and XP has been able to read/play them, but further investigation is required to determine if there are any other issues, etc. There are no relevant Windows updates available at this time, but I shall go to the Lite-On website for information/fixes/updates and report back should there be anything relevant. Also, when I return to the store, I will also get back for future reference with the brand and format of those discs which didn't work for ISO's (discarded the original package as I have a storage spindle).
Also to Island Dog, thanks again for your offer to send me a copy, and not to worry if it's already on its way....the spare'll come in handy (one each) if the wife and I aren't speaking to eachother.
Anyway, now I'm gonna bugger off to play with it.

I also installed RC1 on my wife's machine and managed to install quite few programs on her vesrion without issue, but I've not had the same luck on my own. Downloaded installations go in like a dream, but installing from disc is a problem....the autorun feature on RC1 is broken and I have to access the installers via Explorer. I've been to the Lite-On site and updated the drivers, but the autorun feature is still a bit iffy.....sometimes it'll start up immediately, others I have to reinsert the disc a couple of times before its recognised/runs.
This issue does not occur when I'm booted in XP (didn't when I was running the second beta), however, so I'm guessing my DVD ROM's/drivers aren't compatible with the RC1 release at this time, being that autorun and RC1 play well together with my Samsung CD burner. I've sent feedback to both MS and Lite-On, so hopefully they'll resolve the issue between them.

Thanks very much, Island Dog, the RC1 disc arrived in the post today.
Dunno what you did right that I didn't, but when I insert the disc while XP is running, I don't get the 'not a valid Win32 application' error message that I was getting with those ones I burned....and burned, and burned.
All's well that ends well, though...Vista RC1 will be easier to install now and you have our gratitude.

Thanks, Corky, I'll give that a try (that's if she'll let me anywhere near now she's well & truly got the "I've got my own PC" bug
Also, I looked into and downloaded Ashampoo's Burning Studio 6, which has ISO support, various speeed selections and much more, so does anyone here know anything about this program, whether or not it would have better support than Nero for these newer optical drives I now have. I've been trying to make head or tail of the tech speak in the users manual, but many of its terms/phrases are double Dutch to me and I'm lost in specs, figures and equations that are well beyond me. Funny thing that....I can build me missus a PC but can't RTFM.
It appears to be a feature rich suite of burning/ripping programs, so if it suits my needs, at U.S. $29.95 it may very well be worth the investment.....anyone with any input/info/experience at all, please share it with us for future reference.
In the meantime, however, it's 9.00 am and I've not been to bed yet, so I'm gonna get some snooze prior to attempting another burn (or 6) of RC1. I'll try it on my wife's machine, then on my own using the Ashampoo burning suite before reporting back with the results...which hopefully are positive this time. I'm so sick and tired of creating frisbees the cat won't fetch....tho I think I may have come up with an ingenious idea as to how I can train him to bring 'em back. Attach the disc/now frisbee to the cat, throw him instead, then hold up a sardine so he comes running back for the delicious (to him) morsel.
