HD Sata and HD IDE.., could they work...?

Wednesday, August 16, 2006 by TYCUS | Discussion: Hard Drives

hi everyone!

i'm about to buy a new sata HD, but i already have two HD with connection IDE(you know.., the normal slow HD, with the big cable that says master and slave), and i was asking my self that if it is possible to have a sata HD and a IDE HD at the same time in the same computer? how does the CPU will know which one is the slave and which one the master HD? and about this Sata HD, it's a good speed 7200 of buffer(becouse i saw one with 10000, but it is way too expensive )?

I need your help before i buy something...

thankx!

Mine is 1x250Gb S300, 1x500Gb S300, 1x250Gb IDE

The only thing to remember with that config is when you boot from cd it sees the IDE first. I forgot. I was merrily formatting C:/ only to realize (too late) it was one of my back-ups I was formatting not my Windows partition... duh!

How's that Super Wizop? You mean there are same letters for the drives, i.e. one C: for the IDE and another C: for the SATA drive? That is because, I suppose when you assign a drive to be the Master having the OS booting from it, it is automatically assigned the C: letter, am I correct? I am upgrading for a MoBo with IDE and SATA connectors and before I begin would like to know it better. Thanx!

The drives look different from within DOS, it changes the drive letters so the IDE primary reads as C: instead of the SATA. It's best to ignore the drive letter and look at the label.

You mean, SATA drives are shown with SATA label IDs?
Thanx again.

And I have trouble filling up my two 160 GB SATA drives! I wouldn't know what to do with all the storage JAFO has

I dunno...first thing I would do is mirror the hard drives. But yeah, someone heading to the Terabyte mark is my idol at this point.

So what'd you finally do, Tycus? I'm curious. I just came across this today, and my first instinct was to set the master/slave settings in the BIOS and on the HD jumpers. I'm curious to know what your final setup is.

After a year of constant upgrading, I think I've finally come to where I wanna be with hard-drives....well I hope so cos now there's other hardware to consider, and Vista's just around the corner.....

Just got me a 200gig Samsung SATA, with price being the determining factor between it and a 250 gig....the 250 being near a $100 more and hardly worth the extra when I could've got two 160's (IDE or SATA) for just a tad more. The following is my current HD configuration, according to 'Disk Management'......

Seagate 160gig IDE....Master on 0
Western Digital 160gig IDE....Slave on 0
Samsung 200gig SATA......Master on 1
Western Digital 160gig SATA....Slave on 1
Maxtor 180gig SATA.....Slave on 2.

S'pose now I'll have a free Byte or two to store all those lovely skins.....tho with two LiteOn DVD burners and a Samsung CD ROM/burner, I'm wondering if there'll be any room left in the case for anything else.

Just as well I have four case fans running to keep 'em cool, eh!

My very own oppinion is to use the SATA HD as the master driver and install all the programs and drivers in there, and save all stuff in the IDE HD., by doing this, your system will get a good speed...
