What does it take?

Wednesday, May 31, 2006 by sTonEbLuE | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Exactly what does it take to get promoted around here? I see people here that haven't even been here a year, not skinners and most of their forum activity is in "meaningless" posts. And I mean I don't see them helping or trying to help someone. And please don't send me to a link...I've read them before and I am still wondering. I know...I know...I'll get labeled a whiner. But I am really just curious....

If you've read them before, then your question should have been answered.

That's the kind of response I expected....Which was no answer.

Yep...but isn't that what you knew already? Play nice and don't make waves if a promotion is something that you really want....kind of like at work. Only thing is...you don't get a raise here.

LMAO...
I am going to remain somewhat reserved on this issue..
My point proven , huh?

*Exactly*

But SB, really..who cares? having the title doesnt make your work any better or worse..it's just a title, and pretty much meaningless, other than a few so called "benefits" that can actually be a "hinderance" for you and others..

Just keep on doing what you like to do, Skin.. upload and move on to the next project... Thats probably the best way to be surprised if you do get a promotion...

I didn't know there were promotions here ! I have seen people labled Journey Man and stuff like that, but I thought that was when they reached a certain number of posts or uploads or something. They get benifits. I better crawl out from under this rock . Jafo and Brad are the only people I know of that are staff .

Technically, as yet no-one is 'staff' on Wincustomize.com, though people such as T-Man are employed as site-coders, etc, but their role is not exclusive to Wincustomize.com.

Even Frogboy's 'interaction' with Wincustomize.com is voluntary in the strictest definition of the term...

Promotions: When you expect them you don't see them, but see them when you don't expect them... is that clear enough?

Play nice and don't make waves

Do you think this post is "not playing nice and making waves"?
I have said things before in posts and they got spun. It's all about the typed text and how someone "interpets" it. It's unfair and true....oh well...I'll keep plugging away even though my original questions remain unanswered.

Do you want a promotion? Why? What's it get you?

The only thing I (think I) got with my promotion is the honorific.

Apprentice
A citizen user who has submitted skins can be nominated to be promoted to an Apprentice. To become an apprentice one needs to be contributing to the skinning community in some way. WinCustomize is not the skinning community, helping other websites in the skinning community counts as well. An apprentice can not only talk on the message board but can also comment on skins and the news items. The honorific "Sir" or "Lady" is appended to the front of their na There is also a Master Apprentice rank for those right on the verge of becoming Journeymen.

I like helping out here. The promotion was a surprise to me Just like it was a surprise to the Master that promoted me that I wasn't already promoted.

The percieved tone of your OP (and follow-up posts)was that there was unfairness going on. That you deserved it more than otheres. It sounded like a whine to me.

If I were you, I'd quietly accept that promotions are nebulous. I'd skin some more and help out some more and see what happens.

I'd also change my motto on your profile page.
My Motto: People suck!

So how does one "interpret" .... "meaningless" ?

I am not here to get into anything. Or a lengthy debate of sorts. I will retract my questions and quietly bow out. I knew I would get the type of responses I did. But I was hoping for something a bit more tangible. Thank you everybody for your answers. That's it for me!

sTonEbLuE ...

More often than not [it seems that way sometimes] promotions are caused by Good Morphing noticing people's works/input on the site and forwarding their name/s to me via email with a 'what do you think?' question....

If I'm unsure...I'll look...to jog memory....but usually it's a case of 'gee, I thought they already had been'...so then they are...

When one becomes a 'Sir,' do they get a suit of armor too?

And if so, is the armor skinnable?

Oh man! When I got my totally unexpected Journeyman status I was surprised at all the perks...I got a car...a time share thing with Brads house ( I gotta bring my own food though)...my future subsciptions were all free...I got all the software for free...Brad comes by and mows my lawn once a week...monthly trips to disneyland...the list never ends!

But really SB...I asked the same question out of curiosity when I first became a member here...and the answer I got was... contribute to the community. And thats what I've been doing ever since. I started tinkering around with stuff and found something I enjoyed doing...like making docks for skins. And while doing that...helping out answering questions where I could...basically treating this place like a home away from home. And after I asked the question I never really gave it another thought...then one day out of the blue I was promoted. Its really a no brainer.
