Help please with my microphone?!?

Saturday, May 6, 2006 by broadway_dude | Discussion: Personal Computing

I need help with my microphone.

Before, my microphone worked fine and I was able to record sounds when I spoke into it but now, it works differently. I don't know what happened but it doesn't record what I say into it but instead it just records the sound that plays on the computer. I want to know how to switch it back and forth so one time, I can record my own voice or whatever and another time, I can record the music that's playing on my computer even with a headphone. How do I siwtch it back and forth?

I use Windows XP and Thank you!

open your volume control (right click the volume systray icon) and see if your mic is muted

Right now your playing your sound through your sound card...you must of ticked off the wrong box by accident in the sound panel Options.
( to check this )
Click on the sound icon in your system tray...go to Options in upper left corner. Go to Properties. Once you have the properties panel up..check to see what box is ticked off. If " recording " is ticked off...that would be the set up to play through your sound card. To play you would tick off " stereo mix " which would mute your microphone. Then in order to " speak " you would untick the stereo mixer and tick off the microphone.

So if you do not want to play through sound card at all...just go back to step 1 . Go to options > properties > and just make sure you check off "adjust volume for " Playback " then click on " Ok " and main panel will come back...now you should be able to play and record from an outside source ( your speakers ) .

If you wanted to be able to switch it back and forth..use the first set of directions. You would tick off " recording " then you can go below to the area that says " show the following volume controls " I have everything UN-checked - except for " stereo mix " and microphone "
And you just check off one or the other. Stereo mix ( only internal sound is recorded ) Check off microphone ( outside source is recorded )

Just remember when you close the panel ..the next time you open it ..you will be back to the main control panel and will need to go back to the Options > properties > recording - Ok

your welcome.....

Also if you would like a shortcut on your desktop to bring up this panel - so you dont have to go through changing the option each time..

Just right click on your desktop " New Shortcut " then paste this command in the location in the shortcut wizard - make sure you include the -r or you will get main panel and not the recording panel -
c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe -r

Then you will have a shortcut to the recording panel on desktop or in my case on my " Right Click " menu program

There isnt a direct pathway to this sound ( recording ) panel and I can't take credit for finding this info - buzzh58 was the one that searched out this info awhile ago and passed it on to me.
