Star Trek Celebrates 40th

Star Trek will celebrate its 40th anniversary this Sept. What is in store you asked? Well, I only have a tid-bit of information for you. As more news comes out I will try to keep you updated.
Yesterday an exclusive licensing deal was announced with CBS Corp.’s CBS Communications Group, Bethesda Softworks LLC will publish Trek games for consoles, handheld systems and personal computers. The terms of this deal were not disclosed.
Rockville, Md.-based Bethesda's first title will be "Star Trek: Legacy," where gamers can orchestrate space battles as a Starfleet admiral. A second game for handheld systems will let players control either Federation or Klingon forces. Both are scheduled for release in September to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the franchise that introduced to us pointy-eared Vulcans and photon torpedoes.
Also, if you jump into your shuttle and visit http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/gaming/online/article/6632.html you will find that Star Trek Online is coming aboard the world of internet gaming as well. As of July 2005 Perpetual Entertainment (based out of San Francisco created by MMO and networked game veterans) is in pre-production of Star Trek Online. The Beta for this game is due out in 2006. Sounds like more plans for their 40th anniversary are in store.
The setting for STO is set at some time following the latest movie "Star Trek Nemesis." Missions will be included from other storylines and characters from Star Trek. STO is a PC platform game, which will be available internationally with releases in a variety of languages. STO will deliver the essential experiences associated with Star Trek: shipboard & star base life, away missions, holodeck, and starship encounters. Players will have the opportunity to engage in exploration, combat, problem solving, and diplomacy in addition to character development and social activities. The player point of view in all modes of play will be predominantly 3rd person. At launch all players will be part of Starfleet. Additional factions will be made available via expansions.
The real-time combat system is planned to take advantage of many of the skills and abilities seen in Star Trek: using heavy weapons, energy shields, pattern enhancers, and more. Players can form away-teams with any mix of defensive, offensive, and support characters. Players will have the opportunity to join with other players on the bridge of a starship to engage in large-scale space combat with NPC enemy controlled vessels. PvP will not be a primary means of advancement at game launch, but the holodeck will provide many opportunities for players to fight each other in ships and on the ground in a competitive holographic environment. Also, STO will use the Holodeck to offer imaginative and historical experiences for players, including player vs. player competitions.

Why celebrate the 40th anniversary when we have no new Star trek show running nor any new movie? It's been awhile since we had a good Star trek series going as Enterprise dosen't count.

Enterprise dosen't count because of several reasons. The show was supposed to be set before Kirk yet they had technology that was after Kirk. The shows plots were horrible. It seems ever since Roddenberry died Star Trek has been slowly going downhill. DS9 was awesome and Voyager was OK. Enterprise wasn't that good. That's why it was canceled early.

I have so many mixed feelings on Enterprise and what they did to the whole franchise. From little things like not reverting back to how the Klingons looked in the first Star Trek (They totally said screw the history...even after DS9 touched on the Klingon issue in the 'Tribble' revisit).... to the 'Terrorist-like' plot line of Enterprise ( we want to 'escape' from that crap)....to leaving DS9 in limbo (as well as Voyager, as far as I'm concerned)...to killing Data.

I too miss the "good" Star Trek shows. I never liked Enterprise, quite honestly, I'm glad they cancled it. I'm actually hoping if this game takes off we'll soon be seeing a new Star Trek series. Especially, since CBS took over.

Star Trek Now Under "CBS Paramount Television"
If you've been reading the business pages lately, you probably know that Viacom — the home company of Paramount Pictures and Star Trek — was split into two separate entities as of the first of the year: CBS Corp. and the "new" Viacom Inc. Under the terms of the separation, CBS took control of — among other things — all of Paramount's television properties.
The new division housing these television properties, including all the Star Trek TV series, was formally unveiled today: CBS Paramount Television.
"The new name brings together two of the most iconic symbols in entertainment — the CBS Eye, one of the most recognized logos in the world, and the Paramount mountain," read a press release from CBS. "Both brands and symbols will be part of the division's new identity and logo," which can be seen at left.
According to Daily Variety, "Keeping 'Paramount' in the new name was a nod to history as well as recognition that the Par brand still has some equity among viewers. Studio is associated with a number of franchises, from Star Trek to Frasier."
Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corp., made the announcement. "The new CBS Paramount Television represents the very finest collection of programs on television, from hit network series to top-rated syndicated programming to an extraordinary library," he said.
That library contains over 60,000 hours of television programming, with titles that include cherished classics such as I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Cheers and many others, along with Trek. CBS Paramount TV currently produces more than 46 hours of programming each week, including the CSI franchise, Medium, Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends and Charmed, as well as syndicated fare such as Entertainment Tonight, The Insider and Dr. Phil, which continue to be shot on the Paramount lot.
The Paramount Television label has existed since the late 1960s, when Paramount Pictures acquired Desilu Productions from Lucille Ball, thus picking up Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and other shows, and launching its TV operation from there.
Licensing and merchandising activities for Star Trek will now fall under the aegis of CBS Consumer Products. However, according to Variety, Paramount Home Entertainment (which remains with Viacom) will continue to distribute Star Trek on DVD, at least in the short term.
Simon & Schuster — which publishes all Star Trek books through its Pocket Books label — is now owned by CBS Corp., as is Paramount Parks, which operates Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. CBS also holds UPN, Showtime, King World, etc.
Viacom Inc. retains Paramount Pictures, Paramount Home Entertainment, MTV Networks (which includes Spike TV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, TV Land and many others), BET and music publisher Famous Music.
CBS has already started to exploit the Trek property by offering downloadable episodes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager through the Google Video Store (related story).

Nimoy in Super Bowl Commercial
Watching the big game this Sunday? Be sure to stick around for the commercials, at least in the first half. Leonard Nimoy is going to be getting relief for his arthritis in a 30-second spot expected to air in the first or second quarter of the game.
Playing himself, Nimoy will be on a theatrical set for an acting gig, and apparently pain in his hand is getting in the way. So he turns to pain reliever Aleve. "Fortunately, Aleve allows Leonard Nimoy to be his best self," said an executive at the drug company. Though the topic is arthritis, the executive said the tone of the commercial will be "spirited and fun" to fit the Super Bowl milieu.

I always thought the original series was the only half-decent one of them all.
Much like Doctor Who....things didn't evolve well [though in the latter's case the 'current' series was a blast]...
