New Object Desktop program coming
And new WinCustomize section..

Just a head's up, Stardock will soon be putting into beta a new Object Desktop program called SoundPackager (or some name that isn't already trademarked <g>).
It will do for system sounds what IconPackager did for icons. It will add a host of new sounds for all kinds of events on the system that will help spruce up your environment and give you greater control over it. We will have a WinCustomize section for users to submit their sound packages as well.

I've taken many WB sounds and used them for Windows aps. This will be a most welcome feature.

hmm, it should be free, as there is already such support on Windows as Sound sceheme & this is more like another interface, i have been using one such theme from a long time, some sounds collected, & i m using it from 6 years

I remember an app called WavEvents that let you add sounds to limited functions (Close, Open, Minimize, etc.) of existing programs. Will similar functionality be in this?
Hope you guys can do some interesting stuff with this part of the os that has been largely ignored for a while now.
Now I wish microsoft or someone else would just make it possible to assign specific programs to individual sound cards. That way I could have media output to my stereo and keep system sounds on the system...

Wow. That was a bit crazy. I had Media Player running and was also running the UD Agent from United Devices utilising quite a bit of my processor. That made the computer go beeping crazy when I first ran it.

This is a great idea... I've had Star Wars sounds on my computer for a long time... but sometimes I want different schemes with different visual themes... and it's too much damn work to change em all the time... Thanks Stardock!

A terrific idea!It's funny because I was just searching for some WAV files online to change my welcome and exit sounds and only came up with two but the sound quality was really crappy.Am really looking forward to this Beta.

I don't really care all that much about system sounds (I pretty much always turn them off, as they get annoying after a while). If I can change them easily, and if the sounds aren't too obnoxious, I'd be willing to give it a try, I might actually keep system sounds if they can be done well.
But if you want my opinion, I'd really rather see the resources go to updating and / or improving some of the core applications. The virtual desktops app still needs a fair amount of work (proper wallpaper switching, even if DX is running, multiple monitor support, locking and excluding windows, etc.), a new WindowFX has been promised for a while, it would be nice to see that as well. Not to mention seeing the updated CC and OB. I know these things take a lot of work, and contrary to how it may sound, I'm not really all that impatient, but from the way things seem to go, it makes me wonder if your resources aren't spread a bit thin at times. I'm all for cool new features and applications, but I'm even more for getting the current crop of apps fully ready for prime time.

the ability to offset (via a slider) the position/center of any Object Dock dock would be nice, so that they can be used on spanned multiple monitors, for example. I am stuck using DualView monitors just because I have so many docks and want them to work differently on different monitors. An offset slider would end this workaround for me.
Rocket Dock has this seemingly very simple to implement feature.

Awesome. I've got entire sets of sounds from Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber that were painstakingly added via the default Windows sound app so this will be MUCH better

Sounds great cant wait, BUT will it support more then just .wav sounds?? I prefer Voice schemes that relay what is happening, I have many sound sets I have stripped from games but I spend most of my time converting sounds I have found to the .wav format.

I'll be all over this like a rabid dog. Sound is my thing and I've been wanting a program along the lines of this for a long time.
I have a pretty big collection of sounds I've made myself so look forward to putting a pack together for the program.

From the days of Windows 95 through Windows XP, I've used the same little tool for handling sound files. It was freeware, but it appears the author's site has gone down. It allowed you to choose multiple sound files for each event, and the program would randomize which one would be played. You could also add events to any .exe program like open, close, minimize, maximize. I've collected 1000's of sound clips, and then sorted them into categories that would make sense when they played. Jafo mentioned the 2001 clip, "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." Which would make sense as an error message. Or 2001's quote, "I'm a HAL 9000 computer, and I'm completely functional" as a start-up sound.
It had a nice drag and drop interface, so you could have all your sounds in one directory, and just drag and drop for each event. Since the programmer's site has gone the way of the dodo bird, I'd be glad to send a copy of the program to the developers here at WinCustomize to take a look at. It has never crashed or interfered with any program from Win95 through XP Pro. It's features and usability would be a nice template for you guys to use.
Since I don't check the forums that often, just e-mail [email protected] if you are interested.
