They are a legitimate alternative/option for filtered browsing and hence will stay....

Hey Cyberworld, on a site this size ratings are a necessary evil, without a rating system all site visitors would have access to all skins. Unregistered user see skins of a set rating and above. This varies by type of skin. If all users could see all skins there would be less reason to register or subscribe.

The only thing wrong with the rating system is the occasional drive-by idiot who thinks putting a one on everything is fun. The outcome usually involves some kind of gonad removal 
The rating system works fine when used properly. Everyone can make the rating system better by going out and rating something. Do it now!

But there are sooooo many ways already to browse the site. And this watch list feature is just one of the best ideas.
And what exactly is the problem with that? I thought the main incentive are the programs and not the skins. Plus visitors don't see the skins who are supposed not to be of good quality. A stronger incentive to subscribe would be if the visitors didn't see skins above 3.5 stars. But that would work negatively too. Right?
Fact which it ain't funny. I see lots of good skins and walls getting downrated like that. Recent observations of drive-bies are with walls and bootskins sections. For a period of two pages it seems like a hurricane drove by! And a surprising fall of skins with 200-400 dll yesterday to a mere 2-10 dll today! It ain't fair for authors. And many get dissappointed.
On a different note: Insted of ratings can we just have votes on skins? E.g. This skins is being recommended by XX Users.
Or it's just a matter of the rating institution ageing thus more difficult to change?

I've seen a some people complain about ratings and I notice a lot of times they have an incredible amount of downloads for their skins. It's no different than movie reviews..the box office dollar/ticket sales is the final word. I wish I had half the downloads some people do here..
I think that speaks more for their talent than anything else.
My lowest rating is a 3 or a 4. My highest was a 7..and I've seen those flucuate but never go higher. The first 8 I got was on OD icons..6 or 7 submitted at once that seemd to get an automatic rating?
My SS's seem to start at 6 and wp's at 6 or 7...I dunno. I stopped worrying about the ratings when I realized that I could predict what it would start at .
Anyway...I think the downloads speak volumes, and when you have 300,000+...you should not even care about the ratings.

If I were a skinner I may feel diferently, but as one who admires the talent here, I have no intresst in the rating near as much as what the item looks like,. The download count says much more than a few stars!

And it is my best icon ever...
