Please Read this if your UI is black and painting slowly

Saturday, December 17, 2005 by Neil Banfield | Discussion: WindowBlinds

If you have installed a pirate copy (AKA cracked) version of WindowBlinds 5, please be aware that the crack is faulty and WindowBlinds will cease to function correctly on your computer.

To fix this you just need to uninstall WB and if you wish install a purchased copy of WB, or the trial.

To uninstall, you can either wait for your computer to login, unload WB (either using wbconfig, display properties, or from a command prompt calling WBLOAD UNLOAD) and then uninstall WB.  Or you can boot into safe mode & uninstall WB from there.

Your computer has not been harmed in anyway.  Whoever made the crack did a poor job and patched out code that causes WindowBlinds to no longer be able to paint bitmaps (so title bars, borders, everything will be black).

Actually buying the program seems like the logical conclusion. No problems here with mine.

As has been mentioned many times, you get what you pay for.

Just to clarify things... Citizen Mangyrat is listed as a current customer...ergo he has purchased WB....however the problem seems to be this desire to play with 'altered' versions as well...causing issues.

Now, if a clean format/install [and unadulterated WB download/install] is still causing problems then it's likely to be an issue with the 'success' of the OS install...eg appropriate drivers, etc...

We have had a report of the very latest beta release of WB5 not working correctly on XP 64 bit.

If you disable show beta releases & then reinstall WB5 (having removed it), does this fix the problem?

Hello, I use WindowBlinds a long time and I'm happy with it. I have downloaded WindowBlinds 5.0 from stardock and I tested the crack that they talk about here. What I see is indeed, the black screen !! So Stardock is NOT the problem but it is the crack, because ALL the other software that stardock made is working good on my pc
So I want to say congratulations to the makers of WindowBlinds 5.0 to stop the crackers Hihi
I have purchased WindowBlinds 5.0 and I hope the serial they gave me works without any mistakes

Alright, this is a little hard for me, so, here goes:

I had downloaded the cracked windows blinds edition discussed above, not to "test" it, but to actually use it, knowing full and well that it was illegal. I did not, however, experience as near bad of problems that others have had, just uninstalled. The reason I am posting here is because while looking for a fix for it, I stumbled unto this forum. I have read it from beggining to end. After reading, I felt an incredible sense of guilt. I have downloaded and cracked alot of software myself, (not a brag) even mass distributed it on LimeWire and BitTorrent. Anyways, after reading this I have decided to stop everything I am doing in the ways of stealing things over the internet. I now realize that I was being a total jackass, and that it was incredible I had the balls to do it. I can't see how I didn't realize before now, but this has helped. I am not looking for sympathy, or a handout, all I want is to let you all know that I appreciate the things you've said here. All I can say is that I have deleted everything illegal on my computer and have no plans to continue what I was doing. I may get in trouble for even posting these things, but I felt that you all should know that you've helped at least a few of us out there.

Thanks, AnonymousMe

Just thought I'd post something, cuz if it was me, I'd have to see if anybody said anything and what they said. My time of walking the path not well lit was before the 'virtual reality' but I do understand if what you say is now true, then there is deeper truth involved and I agree it would be hard to post it...anonymous or not. Power to you.

You won't get into any trouble at all for posting as you have done.

You show a mature and commendable understanding of the realities of it all....

More power to you....

And Britain, Oz, Germany, Japan, Russia, France for doing the same thing.......

While we're at it, let's bash aliens as well.....for not sharing their technology unless they crash here.

Sorry, but Stardock needs to own up to this. I am fully registered and have witnessed the problem. I believe it came after playing with Enhanced Dialogs which has caused me tremendous problems.

We had this problem on a clients computer (I work in pc repair), he told us that he had been using Windowblinds (Illegally) for about 2 months, and only then it just suddenly decided to pack in on him. I dont think theres any reason for that.. other than a dodgy crack.

Perhaps it's a perfectly GOOD 'crack', which, by definition breaks something.

Remind me to shed a tear...oh, and BTW....if you work in 'PC repair'  I'm SURE you actually explain to your customers WHY it is not smart to be playing with cracked software.

If you had any sense you would return the machine to him as it was....and actually TELL him that Legal responsibilities preclude you from working with pirated software.

With respect Jafo, if every repair shop sent their customers packing whenever they brought in a system with any form of pirated software installed, they'd have no customer base left... Sad, but true.
