I would like to know if its hard to get started making skins, and what programs will I need. I have a lot of spare time and want to try something new. Thanks for all the help and have a Great Holiday Season

You'll need a graphics program (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Gimp etc), SkinStudio to build the skins and plenty of time (which you claim to have ) If you load existing skins in SkinStudio and see how they're built it is not that difficult to then build your own.

You can create a full-featured skin using just MSPaint, too, except for the per-pixel "glass" effects. I agree with Scarebear - a good way to get started (what I did) is to load up a skin in SkinStudio (I actually started with Notepad before SKS was published, but that's another story) & start looking at all the graphics & attribute parameters, playing around with them & reloading the skin to see the effects of changes (SKS Preview is good for most things but doesn't preview a number of features).

And DO budget a lot of time for it - it's both challenging & addictive.

Quick question, what would you consider to be the best graphics program?

That could start a debate.
