Tahoma replaced by Segoe UI

Monday, November 28, 2005 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

Betanews is reporting that Microsoft has developed a new font called Segoe UI.  This isn't really news to many of you but what was news to us is that Microsoft actually optimized this new font for clear-type and that previous fonts were not similarly optimized.

For those who might think fonts aren't news - consider how much time you spend reading things. How much would you be willing to spend for that to be even a few percent faster? It's your life, after all.

You had it probably since Longhorn/Vista started leaking. I got mine through the Arrow skin here. And for a font, a fw months is pretty new.
The thing about Segoe UI is that it's optimized for ClearType. I got some more info about the font that I'll post soon. It's an impressive amount of work done on it.

its a nice typeface.. its got more personality than tohoma and has some traits that set it farther from 'just another sans-serif font'.

Segoe UI is just a sad rip-off of a font called Frutiger. Frutiger has been around since before computers. It isn't months old, it's decades old. More here:

That's kind of funny. There are differences, like in the capital 'S,' but they are pretty close.

It's not uncommon for someone to take an existing font and tweak it a little though and slap a new name on it.

I read about this on Wikipedia a few days ago. Linotype (a type foundry) apparantly is protesting Segoe even being used in Vista.

Wonder what will happen.
