3d WB

Wednesday, November 23, 2005 by eggcreamsrgood | Discussion: WindowBlinds

i really have no idea how to make skins in the skin studio and lately i was wondering if there was a skin in 3d (anaglyph with those red and blue glasses)

that would be cool if you could compute in "3d"

i'm just putting out this suggestion

I haven't seen one. If anyone attempts it, I would prefer polarized like IMAX.

Or if someone could figure out how to get DTX to work similar to 3dna...I'd be happy

See that is what I thought I would see with DTX, bichur...

I'm thinking it's possible (I'm an optimist) but it would be extremely large for DTX theme. If possible it would also take an inordinate amount of scripting.

or you could just figure out a way to make the nvidia anaglyph 3d driver work on things other than game windows, etc.

Now there's an idea. Ya wanna see what you can do, eggcreams? I kinda brought this subject up of 3d desktop in "Discussing the Future of DesktopX" thread.

Isn't Vista using DirectX to do it's Transparency drawing stuff (and therefore not supporting native opengl since opengl would be running within directx?) I think this "nice look mode" in Vista renders the entire desktop as surfaces in directx, not 100% sure about this. If it is that way, then vista be 3d desktop.

But I know that there is some desktop implemented in opengl out there, I think for linux.

Heh, that would be pretty neat to try, a red-blue 3d windowblind. The problem is getting all your other apps to look ok at the same time.

Actually, a while back I spent some time experimenting with a different method of desktop depth illusion, but didn't make a lot of progress. What I tried was a mouse cursor that was actually two slightly different images side by side. Then I would focus on the cursor using the cross-eye method (familiar to stereogram viewers). Of course, the rest of the desktop was then an unfocused mess, and if you focused on it, you lost the cursor illusion. This approach doesn't seem feasible on full monitors, but small phone or PDA screens might really work.

Then there are polarizing glasses, and new flicker methods, which I know less about, but I think they'd have more potential for a full 3d computing experience as the wouldn't suffer from the color distortion of red-blue glasses, and the effect could possibly be applied to the entire screen at once, rather than one part (like with a 3D windowblind, your window edges may be 3d, but what about icons, and window content, etc.)

I think you should try making a skin, maybe not a full windowblind (skin a widget, or make a few icons maybe), in the analglyph 3D. Then show us!

rabid, are you suggesting all desktops could be threeD if you looked at it cross-eyed?

we all know there are skins in the gallery that aren't so easy on the eyes, but this brings a whole new meaning! i can feel my eyes hurting already...

No. I was just relating some experimenting I did a while back. In fact, over ten years ago I was making quasi-random dot sterograms that were animated (on my Amiga using Deluxe Paint3). Ever since I've come back to stereogram-based 3D in brief experiments, e.g. http://www.deviantart.com/view/12250746/

But, like my fascination with knots ( http://hypknotic.deviantart.com/gallery/ ), I have found that most other people just don't get the same enjoyment out of them as I do.

I experimented with a 3D red-blue wb skin a while ago, it worked a little, focused window poped out in front, unfocused windows fell way behind. The only problem was that although the window borders were 3d, nothing else was, so everything other than the borders was ablurry purple mess. Icons are quite hard to see with those glasses on.

It would look a little like this, I cant find my red-blue glasses, so if the colors are the wrong way round, just flip your glasses the other way.

As you can see, it sint ideal..
