how do you do this trick

on the news page i read that you can turn off the windows xp theme service to make wb run faster and i was curious on how you can do that?

If you do NOT have "Administrtive Tools" in your start menu (this is the way Home Edition comes default), then you can do the following:
1. Right-click on "My Computer"
2. Click on "Manage"
3. In the left pane of the new window ("Computer Management"), click on the "+" sign to expand the "Services and Applications"
4. Click on "Services"
5. In the right pane of the "Computer Management" console, scroll down until you see "Themes"
6. Double-click on the word "Themes"
7. In the new window ("Themes Properties (Local Computer)"), in the "General" tab there are the words "Startup Type:" in the mid-section of the window. Click on the drop-box arrow and choose "Disabled"
8. Just under this section are the words "Service Status", just under this are the buttons "Start" and "Stop" next to each other. Click "Stop"
9. At the bottom right corner of the window is the button "Apply" click this, then click "OK"
10. Close "Computer Management" console
This is just in case you do not know what you are doing, which I do not assume, or if you have XP Home Edition, which does not come with Administrative Tools in the Start Menu, unless you opt to do so in the Taskbar Properties-Start Menu. Covering all the bases. Happy Skinning!! BTW, if you want WB to run really fast, run the Blinds that do not have per-pixel or alpha-blending. Personally, I'd rather have a slightly slower acting wonderfully skinned transparent taskbar and beautiful rounded and alpha-blended buttons per-pixel taskbar and startmenu. But that's just me.

Or just open the Start menu, click run and then type "services.msc" without the quotes. Seems a little faster to me.

LOL. I use it often to make sure things aren't sneaking new items on there. I like to use it fast, like a marsupial.

What actually changes when you turn off XP Theme services? Will there be anything noticable other than things running faster?

WebGizmos, If your running Windowblinds, the only thing that will change, besides the amount of available memory, will be the fact that when you unload Windowblinds you can only run Windows Classic. The XP themes (Silver, Olive & Blue) will NOT be available until you restart themes. I haven't run the themes service in any computer for around two years and have never missed it.
For those interested in what services are for or necessary try this site Link he has a explanation of the normally found services as well as a few that third party programs install as well. There are several programs out there to help you find out whats doing what that have been linked to on different threads including Process Explorer, AutoRuns, & Everest Info. You can google any of them and all are free.

Forgot to mention.....
Scorpio Logic I may be wrong but as I remember if you set services through Computer Management that is not a permanent setting but just for that session or maybe that account. I'm not sure as I always use "run" "services.msc" and I don't have any additional user accounts.
